Position Summary

This position will collaborate in developing and implementing a residency model program as part of the TeachUp Indigenous Teacher Preparation Program within the college’s Teacher Education/TeachUp program. The program goal will be to support and create a strong university-district-agency partnership between the Teacher Education Department at San Juan College, and school districts throughout New Mexico. This position will conduct field observations of students, lead meetings with student residents and school-based personnel, attend program design team meetings and provide general supervision support to student residents and co-teachers. Position is a grant position and is subject to grant approval and criteria.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Create a year-long teacher residency program in partnership with school districts throughout New Mexico to train teacher candidates in high-quality pedagogical knowledge and community-based sensitivity awareness;

  • Train teacher residents and their mentors in successful co-teaching strategies;

  • Provide program participants with coaching support that includes extensive content knowledge to teach subjects and a deep understanding of human development that allows them to master the multi-dimensional nature of teaching;

  • Assist in the evaluation and analysis of program evaluations, and assist in writing the final program evaluation;

  • Provides documented records and assessment of the residency component (including memorandum of understandings (MOU) agreements, policy shared regionally, observations, environmental changes and structured observation of education sites, at other sites, etc.), and actively engages students in residency planning, implementation, and assessment as well as supports regional Site Directors with updated current information on practicum students and schedules.

  • Coordinate the residency education process by selecting and developing supportive regional teacher residency education sites, scheduling residency experiences, overseeing administrative requirements (i.e. residency contracts and student licensing), submitting appropriate forms as needed, and fostering positive relations with the local K-12 community.

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with the Senior Director, Leads, and staff instructors and provides training and support to enhance their student programs and develop strong practicum experiences that align with the Teacher Residency program and course learning objectives overall

  • Monitors the quality of residency experiences and instruction by educators through education site visits and student evaluations of education experiences, including surveys and inventories to gauge needs and actionable items.

                                 

  • Serve as a mentor for Indigenous Teacher candidates.

  •   Maintains expertise in New Mexico residency and co-teaching requirements by representing the College on statewide committees and meetings, including various PED, HED, and other entities. Participates in the New Mexico Public Education Department’s New Mexico Indian Education Division meetings.  Participates in the NMPED’s Residency Community of Practice meetings.

  • Foster a residency program environment conducive to diversity, learning, respect, integrity, teamwork, and professionalism.

  • Manages the residency program environment by keeping accurate records and other reports on time and administering academic and attendance policies consistently

  • Attend departmental meetings and other college meetings or events, as required, and work collaboratively on SJC committees.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Senior Director of Teacher Education assigns work in terms of coursework taught, advisories needed, committee support and curriculum development. The supervisor spot-checks in process and completed work for compliance with established procedures.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include New Mexico Public Education Department Residency requirements, InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards, NM Elevate Domain Standards, safety guidelines, and college and program policies and procedures according to the academic sequence and advising office. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of various duties coordinating the teacher residency program. Strict regulations and the variety of tasks to be managed contribute to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to coordinate teacher residency site placements of students within the Teacher Education program through a grant provided by NMPED. Success in this position results in the efficient and effective provision of instruction to students and to compliance with accreditation standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, operates a computer, helps develop pamphlets and marketing materials, creates schedules, uses a telephone and communicates with a variety of collaborative offices across campus by telephone, email and walking to other locations. The employee distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in an office, lab or classroom.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors’ degree in Education required.

  • Must hold a Level II or Level III Teaching License from the New Mexico Public Education Department.

  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
