JOB SUMMARY

The McVay Youth Partnership is a signature endowed program at Hamline University, created in 2004 with a significant gift from Pete and Mary McVay and the McVay Family Foundation. Their dream was threefold: 

  • To provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to develop leadership skills as they serve as mentors and role models working with urban middle and high school youth.
  • To provide a safe, welcoming place for youths to spend time with friends and after school.
  • To assist urban churches in serving the youth in their neighborhoods, without needing to rely on church volunteers.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  Lead, organize and manage McVay Youth Partnership

  • In coordination with the Associate Director of the Wesley Center and the McVay Youth Partnership Advisory Board, provide general oversight of all on-site and/or virtual programming.
  • Coordinate periodic meetings with church partners to ensure success of collaborative efforts at each site.
  • Attend monthly meetings with an executive committee of the McVay Advisory Board to collaborate on planning, evaluation and long term direction of the program.
  • Coordinate the Associate Director of the Wesley Center site supervision visits.
  • Effectively manage the McVay budget to serve youths for each of the sites at multiple programming sites.
  • Once a year organize and facilitate a meeting  of the McVay Advisory Committee to meet with church and site partners, community members, alumni and fellows.
  • Visit churches with McVay Fellows and Interns to share information about the McVay program and thank the churches for their support.
  • Organize and facilitate the Annual McVay Recognition Dinner/Celebration to recognize the McVay Fellows, Associates and Interns, and Church Partners with 200 plus people, including Hamline President, board members, donors, families, and alumni. 
  • Plan and lead events. In the past this has included Halloween parties, campus visits, and end of semester events among others. 
  • Explore and pursue opportunities for additional resources and collaborations to enhance the program- summer programming, additional field trip opportunities and expansion of sites.
  • Prepare year-end reports.
  • Conduct outreach activities to connect with underserved and immigrant communities to create awareness about McVay scholarship opportunities at Hamline University,
  • Organize and participate in community events, workshops and information sessions to engage with the prospective McVay youths and their families.
  • Work closely with parents of McVay youths to learn of the basic needs of their families and work with Hamline students, faculty, staff and initiatives to find opportunities to help meet those needs.

Recruit, train and supervise McVay Fellows, Interns and Associates

  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor and supervise McVay Fellows, Interns and Associates. 
  • Oversee development of training
  • Oversee scheduling that accommodates students’ availability, conflicts and the needs of the sites.
  • Work with each programming site team to provide appropriate programming and leadership.
  • Correct and approve Workday timesheet submissions.

Sustain and develop communications

  • Communicate with Fellows, Interns, Associates, partners, advisory committee, the Associate Director of the Wesley Center, Hamline community and alumni in person, virtually, by email, online and social media platforms.
  • Write letters of recommendation for alumni and graduating students.
  • Communicate with donors to sustain and enhance the relationship.
  • Coordinate with Admissions and Financial Aid to determine eligibility for the McVay Scholarship for youths who attend McVay and are accepted to Hamline.

Sustain and develop community partnerships

  • Continue networking with community organizations (such as Sprockets, Karen Organization of MN, etc.) to enhance and develop the program.

Participate in Wesley Center Responsibilities

  • Weekly one-on-one supervision meetings.
  • Monthly meetings of the executive committee of the McVay Advisory Board.
  • Weekly staff meetings, staff retreats, student worker trainings and annual awards events.
  • Share in development of learning outcomes, assessment and evaluation.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Wesley Center alumni tied to the McVay program and any other appropriate areas of campus involvement.

Students Affairs and Campus Responsibilities

  • Participate in All-Staff, Diversity and Professional Development meetings.
  • Participate in events such as Graduation, Honors Day (as available).

BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage the McVay Youth Partnership budget.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Effective staff management, budgeting, networking and organizational skills.
  • Collaborative communication, use of social media and Google Suite tools.
  • Understanding of student experience, higher education and mentoring.
  • Multicultural competencies and experience in diversity integration.
  • Excellent writing and oral presentation skills.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • 3-5 year’s full-time experience working with youths.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Masters in a related field/teaching certificate or similar certification, ELL experience. 

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to earn van certification once hired

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT

Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Daily work with a laptop computer,
  • Driving for site visits (mileage reimbursement). 


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This is a full time, 1.0 FTE, exempt position, 12 months a year.
  • This position reports to the Associate Director of the Wesley Center
