Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Director, Office of Student Development & Transitional Programs (SDTP), and in reporting to the Senior Coordinator for New Student and Family Programs, the Coordinator provides critical support in planning, and execution of New Student Orientation (NSO) programs for Freshman, Transfer, International, and new student Parent populations. The incumbent provides leadership and oversight of all on-campus and online New Student Orientation (NSO) programs for all newly entering freshman, transfer, and international students, as well as programs for parents/families.

  • Responsible for developing university collateral and publications (both online and printed) for NSO including informational postcards, new student handbooks, brochures, confirmation letters, and parent handbook among others.
  • Collaborates, consults, and communicates with a broad range of campus constituents, in association with other key staff (Director and Senior Coordinator) to implement comprehensive NSO programming; including advisory offices of seven college-based advising centers, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), International and Exchange Student Center (IESC) Programs, the National Center on Deafness (NCOD), and others.
  • Coordinates NSO related sessions that introduce new students and parents/families to critical university policies, procedures and expectations; promotes students’ successful acclimation to the university environment; and ensures student awareness of/access to campus resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field. Upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related, is preferred.
  • Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience; including one year in New Student Orientation & Family programs preferred.
  • A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience generating and monitoring progress achieved with Student Learning Outcomes; familiarity with the Southern California area, Los Angeles, and local social, cultural, and educational venues and attractions preferred
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization or other program-related entity, which included the implementation of campus or organization-wide programming efforts and supervision of paid and/or volunteer employees preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned. Thorough knowledge of: the principles of individual and group behavior, individual counseling techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
  • Ability to: analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
  • Ability to: interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
  • Classification: Student Services Professional III / 3084 / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $5025 - $5281 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $5025 - $7159 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.  
  • This is a Temporary position; end date to be determined.
  • The position is currently hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote) during non-programming weeks/seasons; however, this is subject to change based on student and/or operational needs.
