Chief Objective of Position
The Coordinator for Intercultural Engagement in the Office of Orientation and Student Involvement is responsible for providing involvement opportunities for the vibrant student community on the Christopher Newport University campus. This includes providing administrative, programmatic, and leadership support to culturally based student organizations. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Orientation and Transition Programs, the Coordinator will work to create engagement and programming for students tailored to meet the needs of a diverse undergraduate population focused on identity development, leadership skill acquisition, cultural awareness, and relationship building. The Coordinator should demonstrate a strong commitment to understanding and working with diverse student populations and will serve as a resource.
Work Tasks
  • Assists in the implementation of a long-term vision for intercultural engagement efforts, particularly as it relates to the student transition experience.
  • Plan and execute programs and initiatives during the orientation experience and first six weeks of classes directly tailored to the transition of underrepresented populations. This includes, but is not limited to breakout sessions during Setting Sail Orientation and Welcome Week, Welcome Receptions during the first week of classes, and new ways to help students find their community on campus and in the greater Newport News community.
  • Provide advising support to multiple identity and/or culturally based Recognized Student Organizations. Advising will include organization development, event guidance, direction towards funding opportunities, and individualized student support. This may include work on nights and weekends.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director, creates engagement and learning opportunities for undergraduate students tailored to meet the needs of a diverse undergraduate population and focused on identity development, leadership skill acquisition, cultural awareness, and relationship building. These may include workshops, programs, seminars, series, training exercises, and ceremonies.
  • Develops and implements major events, including, but not limited to: The Ignite Social Change Retreat, Multicultural Graduates Celebration, and the Lavender Graduate Ceremony.
  • Communicates University policies and procedures related to student organizations clearly and effectively.
  • Collects community data and information including membership rosters, campus events, and other organization operational aspects to assist with assessment efforts and annual reports.
  • Develops a creative, comprehensive class-year communication plan for specific social media accounts.
  • Supports larger departmental programs to include but not limited to: Orientation, transition programs, student trainings, etc.
  • Represents the Office of Orientation and Student Involvement on select committees and working groups.
  • Participates in university events that support the academic mission of the University, to include but not limited to: Orientation, Commencement, Move-In, Admission events, and other special events.
  • Works cooperatively with administrative units in Student Affairs, Enrollment and Student Success, Admission, Auxiliary Services and personnel affiliated with student success on university retention initiatives.
  • Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
  • Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.
  • Immediately report unsafe work conditions and work-related incidents to your supervisor; participate in accident investigation requests
  • This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.

Required Education
Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with experience that equates to an advanced degree.

Salary Information Starting at $48,000 commensurate with education and experience.
