Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide administrative support to the Center for Race, Inequality and Social Equity Studies (CRISES). CRISES is a new center run by Dean Lawrence Bobo and consists of a small team of a Director of Administration & Operations and a Research Scholar. The goal of CRISES is to create a space for scholarship and research on race, racism and society.  To accomplish these goals, CRISES will hold events on campus and create a virtual and physical gathering space for research and scholarship. The Program Coordinator will support the Director of Administration and the Research Scholar to organize events, assist with grant proposals and survey research, arrange space and order food for events, coordinate calendars and meetings and other related tasks.


Position Description

CRISES Administrative Support

1.     Serves as principal administrative contact and liaison with departmental and external constituents.

2.     Supports Director of Administration and Operations, Research Scholar, and Director of CRISES with other duties as needed (ordering office supplies, regular workshops series coordination, scheduling conferences and providing space for faculty etc.).

3.     Organizes and implements administrative systems and procedures performing necessary support duties. 

Event Planning

4.     Coordinates and negotiates with hotels, caterers and vendors, makes recommendations for food and activities for participants and guests, managing a pre-assigned event budget

5.     Assigns and coordinates classroom, venue, AV and other facilities on behalf of CRISES.

IT and Web Management

6.     Serves as the IT point person for the department.

7.     Maintains web page with comprehensive department/program news/information working with DAO.

Research and Policy Development

8.     Research issues related to policy development and recommends possible new or revised policy statements.

9.     Research, literature reviews and assistance in collecting data for proposed surveys to be distributed by CRISES.

Grant Coordination

10.  Prepares and reviews complex documents to assure compliance with university requirements and/or Grant regulations.

11.  Assists in the preparation of supplemental material for grant proposals.

12.  Maintains financial documentation, provides information, research, statistics, and analysis.

13.  Makes decisions on small event expenditures and monitors towards a defined budget.

Project Coordination

14.  Coordinates, and has direct responsibility for, a project or specific set of tasks related to logistics, operations, meeting planning, collecting information for CRISES (Ex: setup regular committee meetings).

Data Coordination

15.  Gathers and maintains data for and assists in preparing reports (event evaluation, surveys, help research scholar present data), often using a variety of computer software

16.  Prepare statistics and reports on program participation, marketing responses, budget, and evaluation.

CRISES Administrative Support

17.  Serves as principal administrative contact and liaison with departmental and external constituents.

Basic Qualifications

5+ years of relevant experience is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Strong written and oral communication skills, technology mastery, Google Docs, Microsoft Suite, Teams, Zoom and management of calendar of events and website. Ability to learn Harvard specific budget systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard. 


Additional Information

This position and the CRISES center are operating on a hybrid schedule. The team is required to be on campus 3 days a week and additional days may be required in the case of events or meetings.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.

The core mission of the Center for Race, Inequality and Social Equity Studies (CRISES) is the scholarly analysis of contemporary ethno-racial social conditions (racism, sexism, classism and other forms of oppression) through rigorous methodologies, theory-driven insights and empirically grounded research. The social scientific research conducted by CRISES will inform the vision and attainment of a world without invidious ethno-racial social conditions that are rooted in historical, institutional and systemic inequality. Through its research, collaborations across FAS and Harvard, convenings and residency of scholars, activists and students, CRISES envisions collective healing and a liberated society. CRISES will pursue its mission and vision through three areas of scholarly work:

  • Racial Change and Inequality in the U.S. Studies
  • Comparative Ethno-Racial Transformation
  • Racial Attitudes, Beliefs, and Identities Studies

CRISES aspires to be an ongoing site of original faculty research. This will include first and foremost, the design, implementation and analysis of an annual or semi-annual national representative web-based social survey on issues of Race, Diversity and Democracy in America. Additionally, the Center will:

  • Conduct of a bi-annual topical conference;
  • The support of a regular workshop/speaker series;
  • Providing space for affiliated faculty with research projects including post-doctoral researchers;
  • Funding a small number of annual visiting scholars;
  • Funding for Graduate Student Research; particularly dissertation completion projects;
  • Partnership with the Hutchins Center in the on-going operation of the journal the Du Bois Review: Social Science Research on Race and,
  • Social scientific convenings
