Organizational Unit Overview
The North Carolina Agromedicine Institute (‘the Institute’) is an interinstitutional partnership among East Carolina (ECU), North Carolina State (NCSU) and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State (NCAT) Universities. ECU serves as the lead institution for the partnership with the Institute resting organizationally in the Brody School of Medicine under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Research and Chair of Foundational Sciences. Agromedicine Campus Coordinators are located at NCSU and NCAT. The Institute’s mission is to promote the health and safety of farmers, fishermen, foresters, their workers and their families through research, prevention/intervention and education/outreach. This mission is achieved in partnership with individuals and organizations across all 100 North Carolina counties and other states. The Institute’s main office is located on ECU’s West Research campus in the West Academic building.
Job Duties
50%
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for farm stress-related inquiring coming into the Institute. Route inquiries as appropriate to Institute staff and/or community partners.
  • Assist with set up, training for and activation of farm crisis and resource line; ensure that line is answered, appropriate follow-up is provided to callers and that statistics are maintained for reporting purpose.
  • Promote crisis and resource line promotion and quality improvement activities.
  • Supervise FRSAN-NC Resource Specialist and students, as appropriate.
  • Work with CareNet, Inc., Cooperative Extension, and others, as appropriate, on the development and dissemination of an agricultural specific curriculum for farmers, their families, and farm-related organizations.
  • Assist community partners with coordination and/or reimbursement for Mental Health First Aid, QPR, ASIST, Talk Saves Lives, or similar training.

  • Collaborate with Eastern Area Health Education Center (AHEC) on the development and implementation of training for behavioral health providers not having a background in agriculture and farm-related stress.
  • Participate in Institute staff meetings, Board of Partners meetings, Board of Directors meetings (at the request of the Institute Director), and outreach activities, as appropriate.
  • Promote use of the Institute’s farm stress-related programs by farmers, farm families and farm-related organizations (e.g., Farmer to Farmer, reimbursement for counseling services, training, and resources).
  • Assist with expansion and maintenance of the agricultural stress page on the Institute’s web site.

  • Participate in meetings with community partners at the state and national level, as appropriate.
  • Maintain an individual calendar; contribute to Agromedicine calendar, as appropriate.
  • Work with the Institute Director on completion of project reports for funders.
  • Participate in meetings with project partners (e.g., CareNet, Inc., Cooperative Extension, NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Eastern AHEC, Southern Region-FRSAN, etc.)
  • Comply with federal, state and university policies, as applicable.

Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in public health, social work, counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, medical family therapy, nursing, or a related field with one years’ experience working in human services.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preference will be given to the candidate having: 1) personal and/or professional experience working with farmers, farm workers, their families, and farm-related organizations (e.g., Cooperative Extension, Farm Bureau, Farm Credit, etc.); 2) knowledge of behavioral health services and resources available to support individuals working and living in agriculture; 3) development and use of electronic case management or medical record software; and 4) completion of Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, QPR, Talk Saves Lives or other related training.
