Job Summary


The Content Writer writes various types of content for two units within UCSF, the Institute of Global Health Sciences and the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Content types include email newsletters, online articles, marketing emails, social media posts, ad copy, and annual reports. The content writer also edits external-facing content written by others to ensure that it is high quality, free of errors, and follows appropriate editorial style before publication.

Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.

The Content Writer works under the limited supervision of the Director of Communications and as part of a communications team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Director of Communications and communications team to identify content ideas and produce written content that serves the communications objectives of both units.
  •  Produces bi-monthly and quarterly email newsletters for both units by gathering content from program leads, synthesizing and editing content, checking accuracy, and working with the graphic designer to produce the final product.
  •  Produces at least two articles for each unit monthly by identifying story ideas, interviewing subject matter experts, drafting articles, and incorporating feedback and edits from relevant stakeholders.
  •  Works with the communications team to create weekly social media posts for Facebook, X/Twitter, and LinkedIn.
  •  Works with the Director of Communications and unit leaders to write both units' annual reports or year-end reviews.
  •  Regularly reviews both unit’s websites for accuracy and provides the website administrator with updated content as needed.
  •  Assists the educational programs of both units by writing marketing emails and ad copy for their seasonal recruitment campaigns.
  •  Regularly monitors major news outlets for media mentions and posts them on our websites, social media platforms, and newsletters.

The ideal candidate can write and edit high-quality content in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple deadlines, toggle between multiple requests from two different units, and incorporate multiple points of feedback from stakeholders professionally and tactfully. Excellent writing skills are a must; applicants will be required to submit writing samples.

This hybrid role requires commuting to our Mission Bay office up to two days a week.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

About the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB)
Since 1956, DEB has been pioneers in population science and preventive medicine, achieving breakthroughs on public health problems in California, across the country, and around the world. We stand at the center of many of UCSF’s initiatives in population health, data science and informatics, health services research, and health equity.

Our primary faculty – many of whom are world-renowned experts in their fields – are breaking new ground in diseases of aging, global health, biostatistics, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. We are also critical collaborators with other prominent research units, including the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, the Institute for Global Health Sciences, the Center for Vulnerable Populations, and others.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related discipline, or equivalent training / experience
  • 3+ years of professional writing experience required.
  • 2+ years of professional experience specifically writing for online platforms, including web, email, and social media. This is in addition or part of the minimum 3+ years required professional writing experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
  • Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms platforms Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Thorough research and fact verification skills.
  • Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Thorough attention to detail, project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure while maintaining a professional attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of UCSF, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciences.
  • Knowledge of content management systems WordPress and Drupal.
