Job Summary

This is a Contract position with a 7/1/2024 end date.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the Division of Cardiology is at the forefront of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to help improve outcomes in vulnerable and underserved populations.  We currently have a successful and growing ML predictive analytics team consisting of ML researchers, clinicians, informaticists, and biostatisticians.  We seek a data scientist to join our team to develop AI/ML-based algorithms to support clinical decision making, hospital performance improvement efforts, and more. This position requires experience in computer science, (bio)statistics, or another relevant field.  A proven track record of productivity within academia or industry in publishing and/or developing and applying new algorithms is necessary for this role.  The candidate should have experience developing in a Linux environment, using git-based workflows, writing in Python/R, using high-performance computing, and working collaboratively with a multidisclinary team. Ideally, the candidate also has experience cleaning and analyzing Electronic Health Record (EHR) data, creating datawarehouses for data analytics, and experience/interest in developing new ML algorithms including large language models.

Department Description

This position is within the Division of Cardiology at San Francisco General Hospital and the Kaizen Promotion Office at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.  The role will primarily support the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence within the predictive analytics team within the Kaizen Promotion Office.  The predictive analytics team consists of an executive leader in performance excellence, multiple clinicians, a member of the clinical IT team, a data scientist, several student learners and a faculty member of the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.  The team has extensive experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, informatics, biostatistics, performance improvement, implementation science and academic medicine.  The position will be supervised primarily by the biostatistician and the clinicians on the team.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer / Computational / Data Science, or Domain Sciences with computer / computational / data specialization or equivalent experience
  • Ten or more years of relevant experience
  • Expert knowledge of data science and/or clinical informatics
  • Experience with designing, and implementing, training, and deploying  AI/ML-based algorithms for biomedical applications
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead one or multi-institutional national scale proposals and acquire funding
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences
  • Expert skills  and experience in independently resolving complex computing / data / CI problems using introductory and / or intermediate principles
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with executive-level management on a regular basis as well as funding agency program managers / directors
  • Expert experience working in a complex computing / data / CI environment encompassing all or some of the following: HPC, data science infrastructure and tools / software, and diverse domain science application base
  • Expert ability to independently plan, guide and execute innovative scientific research programs and development projects to completion by selecting approaches, and interpreting and evaluating results with researchers, staff and colleagues and supervisors
  • Proven ability to establish realistic research priorities and lead, motivate and guide colleagues and staff for a sustained effort

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer / Computational / Data Science, or Domain Sciences with computer / computational / data specialization preferred
  • Expert ability to successfully work with multiple concurrent projects. Excellent research and technology project management skills
  • In depth experience assessing a broad spectrum of technical and research needs and demands and establish priorities, leads development of solutions to meet such needs
