Unit Mission Statement
The Office of University Communications serves as the central communications office for the university. In this role, the office serves as the primary link to the press and media on all communications fronts and coordinates university-wide promotional efforts. The News & Media office coordinates all campus-wide press releases, produces online W&M News features and videos for William & Mary’s website. The office also works to promote and celebrate the work of faculty, staff and students and to promote the overall vision, mission and brand of William & Mary.
Position Summary
This position serves as a writer, both in beat areas on campus and general assignment, and works with faculty to pitch them as experts to local, regional and national news outlets. This position will also help manage media relations efforts of the News & Media office and promote the university utilizing digital media tools and social media. Additional duties may include editing and proofreading stories for the W&M News and working with the News & Media team on special projects, major events and crisis management.

Required Qualifications
Education: Undergraduate degree or training in journalism, communications or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Experience: Outstanding news and feature writing skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to write and edit quickly and meet deadlines; experience in media relations and crisis communication or related work; demonstrated knowledge of the latest Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.; knowledge of AP style and proficiency in social media usage and analytics.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in higher ed, public relations, journalism, public contact or related activities preferred.

Advertised Pay Range $45,000-$55,000 commensurate with experience
