Purpose

New Student Services at the University of Texas at Austin (NSS) is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and collaborative person for the position of Communications Specialist. Reporting to the Manager of Communications, the role will assist with the planning, creation and distribution of communications deliverables for New Student Services, including but not limited to email newsletters and marketing materials, graphic design for print and digital platforms, and website and event application management. This position is responsible for ensuing clear and effective messaging is in place for a large audience in support of Family Orientation, and is key in the development, execution and review of Family Orientation communication and marketing plans. In addition to their larger role with Family Orientation, the Communications Specialist will also support other NSS initiatives throughout the year.

The role requires an understanding of audience differentiation, ability to adapt writing to specific purposes, as well as marketing skills in email, print deliverables and web. This position must be able to adapt writing style and creative development to meet key business goals and align with audience and channel-specific needs across platforms. The Communications Specialist must have strong project management and organizational skills, attention to detail and a strong command of written and digital storytelling techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and implementation of a multi-faceted, multi- channel comprehensive communication plan targeting incoming families to promote and drive registration for Family Orientation, as part of the overall New Student Services communications strategy. Work closely with colleagues to develop Family Orientation-specific language

  • Support the overall communications efforts of New Student Services assisting with the production of social media content, promotional materials, and web management for year-round NSS initiatives

  • Develop compelling content to elevate the Family Orientation and New Student Services brand story across a wide range of mediums while adhering to the University and department brand standards.

  • Capture photos and videos at New Student Services events to enhance storytelling techniques.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends, technology and applications to continually enhance the experience of our incoming families and students.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a communication field (advertising, radio/television/film, public

relations, journalism, corporate communications, English) and/or marketing. Two years of experience. Excellent communication, writing and editing abilities. Professional experience creating social media content.

Demonstrated ability to implement creative solutions and take initiative. Comfort working as part of a small team in a fast-paced environment. Ability to multi-task and keep projects well-organized and on deadline. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a professional team with a positive attitude. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience with design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva. Basic videography and photography skills. Experience using Drupal for web content management. Experience working in a higher education setting. Fluent in Spanish.

Salary Range

$45,900

Working Conditions

  • Attire: Business Casual

  • Standard Office Environment, Use of manual dexterity, Repetitive use of keyboard at a workstation.

  • May need to include work outdoors occasionally outdoors.

  • Lift and move up to 20 pounds.

Work Shift

  • 40 hours per week; standard M-F 8-5

  • Variable work hours to include occasional flex scheduling for special events and during the summer.
