Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, is recruiting a Communications Coordinator. The incumbent will coordinate all communications-related activity for the department.
The department is top-ranked for research and teaching in computer science. Its undergraduate program, ranked 8th among public universities by U.S. News & World Report, has an enrollment of more than 3,300 diverse students from around the world. The graduate program ranks 9th among public universities, with over 400 graduate students enrolled. The department has more than 70 internationally renowned faculty members and it employs a highly dedicated staff of more than 30.
The successful candidate is entrepreneurial in their work and enjoys collaborating with a variety of internal and external constituencies in a fast-paced environment. The incumbent is expected to ensure a high level of quality control and attention to detail through reviewing, editing and proofing their own work; be able to build productive, cooperative relationships with colleagues, and faculty and staff members; and be able to independently manage competing priorities in a complex and dynamic environment.
Duties Include:
  • Working closely with the department chair and the assistant director for executive and faculty affairs to develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that advances the department’s objectives
  • Mining for stories, and conducting research and interviews to write and edit news, research and feature stories for the website and monthly newsletter
  • Preparing content for and managing the department’s social media channels
  • Producing a monthly newsletter
  • Managing website content updates
  • Developing communications strategies and materials for signature events and special projects, including fliers, fact sheets, and brochures digitally and in print
  • Advertising internal events and talks
  • Drafting correspondence to support the department with alumni and corporate engagements
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, public relations or a related field

Experience:
  • Five years of professional experience in communications and public relations
  • News and feature writing experience


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing, editing, fact-checking, proofreading, verbal, interpersonal, management and organizational skills
Preferences:
Preferences:
  • Familiarity with Drupal and/or similar content management systems
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud products
  • Experience creating social media content in a professional capacity
  • Media relations experience
  • Experience working in a higher education setting and/or with computer science content and experts
  • Understanding of creative development and production processes
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Graphic design, photography or videography experience a plus

Physical Demands
This position is generally sedentary in nature. Able to operate a computer and other office equipment including printer and copy machine. Substantive repetitive movements (motions) on the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Good visual acuity to perform repetitive tasks, e.g. typing on a computer keyboard, viewing computer terminals, extensive reading. Able to maneuver around the campus to attend meetings, trainings, workshops, seminars, etc. Able to lift and carry small parcels, packages and other items. Ability to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
