UrbanCORE is the hub of UNC Charlotte’s engaged scholarship ecosystem. (CORE is an acronym for Community-Oriented Research and Engagement.) It mobilizes, assesses and advances efforts that connect the University’s interdisciplinary, urban research resources to community assets in order to “co-produce transformative solutions to societal issues and challenges.”
Primary Purpose of Position
Plans and executes communications (with a dotted line to University Communications) related to the University’s community-oriented research and engagement (urbanCORE ) unit for the purpose of elevating its strategic objectives, work, research and researchers, partnerships and accomplishments for internal and external audiences.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with urbanCORE and UComm for the development of an overall communications plan for urbanCORE based on its stated overarching priorities. Supports the strategic coordination of communications priorities and tactical efforts of urbanCORE’s units across its policy & data, community partnership, and faculty/student engagement functions.
  • Drafts news and announcements for internal University audiences about urbanCORE events, opportunities and achievements on both urbanCORE and University communications channels. These include the urbanCORE website(s), social media accounts and newsletter(s); and University-level channels such as NinerInsider and UNC Charlotte magazine.
  • Provides copy editing support to all written communications developed by urbanCORE and its affiliated units, including the Urban Institute and the Women+Girls Research Alliance.
  • Collaborates with UComm colleagues and urbanCORE leaders to identify faculty/staff, students, alumni and community partners whose efforts are advancing the University’s role as a community leader and convener; research, conduct interviews and draft feature content in a variety of formats for urbanCORE and University-owned internal and external communications channels.
  • Provides strategic input related to existing urbanCORE communications channels and makes recommendations related to the development of new ones for effectively reaching relevant audiences. Designs products that support the development of urbanCORE collateral (i.e., templates, power point presentations) for internal use.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Research Translation and Engagement for the Urban Institute to assure urbanCORE communications efforts are consistent, efficient and aligned to UComm strategies and resources.
  • Serves as a project manager for various aspects of communications projects (i.e., scheduling photography, videography, amplification on internal/external channels, etc.) in collaboration with University Communications.
  • Oversees urbanCORE and related websites by creating and updating content, and revising pages as needed. Maintains content on building video monitors and other visual platforms as needed.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing, English or related field
  • At least 3 years of experience developing multi-channel content that aligns with brand guidelines;
  • At least 3 years of experience writing, editing and proofreading, resulting in excellent written communication skills; writing samples required
  • Track record of relationship building
  • Working knowledge of AP Style; familiar with Microsoft Office, Google docs/drives/sheets, database software
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar digital content platform
  • Commitment to and understanding of the role of community-engaged research and community engagement as organizational values and a desire to elevate their institutional integration through interpersonal and professional interaction and collaboration
