Department Description

The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department is a complex academic and research department located in the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis. The Department consists of the Department Chair, 2 Vice Chairs, 20 Faculty, 50+ non-senate academic employees of varying titles (Professional Researchers, Graduate Student Researchers, Teaching Assistants, Visiting Scholars, Postdoctoral Scholars, Unit 18 Lecturers), and 15 administrative and technical employees. The Department houses one graduate program with approximately 45 students. It has approximately 100 undergraduate students enrolled in 2 majors offering 3 degrees: BA and BS in Geology and BS in Marine and Coastal Science (a multi-college major). The current annual budget for instruction and research is $19M with annual research expenditures totaling approximately $1M. The current total budget for sponsored research is $8M. Earth and Planetary Sciences has 5 recharge units with equipment used by many scientists from across campus and off-campus. The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences also manages the CalTeach/Mathematical and Science Teaching Program (MAST) and Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics (CIG).

The Department occupies over 38,000 ASF of space in 4 locations. The faculty maintains a high level of service activity with administrative appointments such as Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs in Public Scholarship and Engagement, Director of CalTeach/MAST and Director of the Institute of the Environment.



Job Summary

Under general direction of the CAO, develop and maintain media, multimedia and Web presentations in support of faculty, staff, and affiliates to support academic and research needs, outreach and communications goals, along with other promotional needs of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and related programs, ensuring visual appropriateness, usability and UC Davis brand continuity. Areas of work include management of the department’s LCD presentation screens, technical implementation of the Content Management System for Earth and Planetary Sciences Department, visual presentation and graphic design, oversight and production of variety of print communications, as well organization of department events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Work occasional overtime including evenings and weekends, sometimes on short notice, to meet operational needs and project priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience, in communications, marketing, public relations or associated field.

·       Experience in the implementation of multimedia displays and related technologies.

·       Experience producing complex printed materials such as brochures, advertisements, newsletters, websites, etc.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of best practices for Web usability and ADA.

·       Knowledge of advanced Content Management Systems and Web infrastructure.

·       Knowledge of advanced Adobe Creative software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

·       Knowledge of basic web languages, including HTML, CSS and XHTML.

·       Knowledge of marketing and branding principles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience in design and usability.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of copyright and trademark policy as it applies to educational institutions.

·       Project management skills to develop and manage and complete projects successfully, meeting established budgets and timelines.

·       Knowledge of design and printing software and technology.

·       Thorough knowledge of UC Davis identity standards.
