We are seeking a Middle School Counselor/Coordinator for the College Bound/GEAR UP Program. This position will report to the Assistant Director of the College Bound/GEAR UP program. The Coordinator will be primarily responsible for providing academic guidance and support to Middle School students and parents participating in the College Bound and GEAR UP programs.

Example of Duties:

  • Advise students in the areas of academics, high school preparation, and college and career exposure, standardized testing career/life planning, and financial aid in individual and/or group setting.
  • Assist in the planning, development and coordination of scheduled activities for student participants and their parents.
  • Coordinate, plan and implement workshops that foster student growth, academic achievement and development.
  • Solicit parental support through general and/or specific informative correspondence.
  • Establish and maintain relationship(s) with public school personnel; i.e. school guidance counselors.
  • Ability to work evenings (Tuesday and Thursday) and weekends (Saturdays/once a month).
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of prospective students.
  • Conduct individual personal educational planning sessions with program participants to determine college and career readiness.
  • Collect and prepare student data (i.e. grades, standardized test scores, attendance, evaluations and discipline issues as required by funding agent and program director.)
  • Assist in the preparation of reports as requested by the Director of Pre-College Programs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director and/or Asst. Director of College Bound/GEAR UP.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education or Student Personnel Services, or a related discipline required.
  • At least two years prior work experience with educationally underprepared students from an urban environment in an advising/counseling capacity.
  • Knowledge of computer programs, for example work processing, data base management and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work in a team environment coordinating needed student services.
  • Ability to communicate on a verbal as well as written basis with students, staff, parents and others.

The completion of a background check will be required for the selected candidate.
