This Temporary appointment can be concluded prior to the stated temporary appointment end date, normally with a two-week notice period. Continuation of this temporary appointment is contingent upon grant funding.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$4,680.00 to $5,083.00 per month ($56,160.00 to $60,996.00 annually) 

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

The incumbent will report to the Principal Investigator (PI) and assist in the grant-funded field and laboratory activities underway on ecology and restoration of coastal habitats, particularly in San Francisco Bay. This incumbent will assist in conducting field and laboratory experiments, sample processing, ordering of supplies, general lab maintenance and organization, data management and analysis, and report writing. Coastal Ecology Technician will arrange and schedule field work and work independently with supervision to manage projects and student interns.

Position Information

Data Analysis and Interpretation/Writing

  • Manage field and lab data in organized fashion
  • Conduct literature searches to support interpretation of data
  • Assist with statistical analyses of data
  • Contribute to writing of reports and manuscripts

Experiments and Field Surveys

  • Assist the PI with development of field and greenhouse experiment and survey design
  • Set up and maintain experiments in the field, greenhouse, and tanks
  • Monitor and collect samples from submerged aquatic vegetation beds and salt marshes, including plants, invertebrates, fish, sediments, microbes, and water quality
  • Map positions of experiments and sample collections using a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit

Sample Processing

  • Return samples collected from field, greenhouse, and tank studies to the lab and label and store according to lab protocols
  • Conduct invertebrate sorting and identification; sediment organic matter, texture, and other analyses; plant tissue biomass measures and analysis of nutrients and other properties

Lab management

  • Order and organize materials and supplies
  • Schedule and manage lab volunteers and interns
  • Maintain chemical lists and follow university procedures for storage of chemicals
  • Assist with training in safety protocols

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledges and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, determining variables, developing bibliographical and other sources of data, and preparation of research reports; general knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of collecting statistical data, simple correlation methods, time series analyses, analysis of frequency series, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers; general knowledge of sources of information on social, economic, and population trends in California. Ability to prepare questionnaires and other survey instruments; ability to gather, compile, and analyze research data, and to present data in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form, ability to prepare and work clear and comprehensive reports; capacity for independent and creative thinking and writing on research and statistical problems; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a small team.

Experience:

Two years of progressively responsible experience in technical research or statistical work in the collection, compilation, and analysis of data. Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Additional experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledges and abilities delineated above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in field techniques for intertidal and subtidal ecological studies including experience in San Francisco Bay, experience in experimental design and lab techniques for sample processing, knowledge of estuarine organisms including invasive and rare species, working knowledge of community and ecosystem ecology, proficiency in geographic information systems.
  • Ability to work independently with supervision to develop creative solutions for study of ecological phenomena.
  • Experience in shallow water conditions and in handling small boats. Strong collaborator, able to work well in teams with others from a variety of backgrounds and experience.
  • Effective communicator (oral, written, and non-verbal).

Environmental/Physical/Special

CA Boating certification and Advanced Open Water SCUBA certification.

Ability to work outdoors in rainy/foggy/muddy conditions, must be able to lift 50 lbs, ability to work from small boats, some work required on weekends and schedule will be adjusted accordingly.
