CO Sr. Nurse Practitioner

The Department of Surgery is seeking a CO  Sr. Nurse Practitioner to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health care team. This Position will be responsible for complex, standardized, patient care procedures that require experience and specialized training that would otherwise be performed by a physician. They will educate patients and families in matters pertaining to health maintenance, disease prevention and appropriate measures in acute and chronic illness. The Sr. Nurse practitioner will direct supervision from appropriate licensed physician as designated.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coordinating and delivering care to surgical and non-surgical patients in both a clinic and hospital setting.
  • Hold independent clinic to manage a panel of follow up and post-op patients for general surgery.
  • Independently perform a comprehensive, accurate history and physical including chief compliant, presenting signs and symptoms, and past medical history and interval history. Recognize differences between normal and abnormal findings. Discuss with attending surgeon as appropriate.
  • Determine differential diagnoses.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic work up through laboratory tests, imaging studies, endoscopy studies.
  • Maintain technical proficiency with approved procedures including suturing, seton tightening, incision and drainage procedures, wound care.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses and options for continued care.
  • Prescribe and regulate medications.
  • Evaluate outcomes of previously implemented interventions.
  • Arrange consultations and referrals when needed.
  • Responsible for admitting patient to the surgical service through clinic when appropriate.
  • Responsible for helping to manage delegated surgeons’ practices including outpatient clinics, diagnostic workups, call/messages, follow up.
  • Remain proficient in the utilization of commonly used clinical protocols and guidelines.
  • Work in collaboration with other providers to run a multidisciplinary clinic for new and established rectal cancer patients weekly.
  • Communicates with healthcare team members to assure patient and organizational needs are met.
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss patient and unit requirements.
  • Responsible for delegating tasks to other team members when appropriate (prior-authorization, FMLA/Disability paperwork)
  • Responsible for providing appropriate coverage for other members of the team (APPS and nursing staff)
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and teaching to the junior APPs, APP students, medical students as needed.
  • Participate in hospital-wide or team-based committees and meetings focusing on quality assurance and safety programs for our surgical patients.
  • Involved in departmental research initiatives.
  • Helps to develop, recommend and participate in the formulation of procedures and protocols for nurse practitioners in accordance with hospital policy to improve patient outcomes.
  • Collaborates with team members to identify opportunities for improvement on best practice for clinical care.
  • Acts as liaison with other medical services (social work, rehabilitation medicine, etc.).
  • Place/sign orders for practice-based providers to expedite care progression.
  • Assist office providers with answering MyChart messages and bill for MyChart message completion when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Minimum of 3 year's experience in related clinical area and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Five years related experience preferred.
  • Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience.
