Description

The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) Nonproliferation Education Program is seeking two or three Research Assistants/Mentors for high school students for the Spring 2024. (Mid-January through mid-May 2024.)  CNS is one of the largest nongovernmental organizations in the world devoted to research, education, and training on nonproliferation disarmament issues. The center's mission is to combat the spread of weapons of mass destruction by training the next generation of nonproliferation specialists and disseminating timely information and analysis.

One of CNS’s flagship projects, the Critical Issues Forum (CIF) http://sites.miis.edu/criticalissuesforum/  is to promote disarmament and nonproliferation education to high school students. The CIF project is in the process of enhancing its collaboration with Middlebury’s Bread Loaf Teacher Network/Next Generation Network. The CIF project will engage the Middlebury Union High School in the project for the 2024. We are looking for Middlebury Undergraduate students who can be mentors of these high school students who will conduct nuclear disarmament project guided by the CNS’s CIF project team led by Masako Toki.

Required Qualifications—this position is specifically for Middlebury College students

·         Excellent in communication

·         Passionate about youth education

·         Basic knowledge in the field of nuclear disarmament, nonproliferation, international peace and security

·         excellent writing, editing, and researching skills in English.

·         excellent coordinating and organizing skills.

·         proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel,

·         experience in major social media platforms (CANVA, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Google Sites etc.)

·         experience in mentoring high school students

Position is paid at level B.


Requirements
Essential Functions:
Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.


Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
