Primary Purpose
Recruit and Coach college student athletes for a COCC Club Sports Team. Plan, organize, conduct and supervise practices and games.
Essenatial Duties and Responsibilities
Athlete/Team Development
  • Leads team representing the college through modeling proper sportsmanship and conduct towards players, officials, and the community.
  • Plans and manages team practices and game preparation focusing on team-cohesion and skill development.
  • Recruits current COCC student to the team, as well as recruits and helps prospective student-athletes to the team each year to be able to have enough participants to field a team.
  • Manages the assistant coaches and other team staff.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of Club Sports to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of award winners at the end of the season.

  • Administrative Functions

  • Communicates with league through emails and in all league meetings and zoom calls.
  • Creates game schedule, and communicating with other teams and coaches to that end.
  • Organizes liability waivers, online team roster with current contact information, and team travel itinerary.
  • Performs tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records. Follows state, regional and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Assists with uniform order, including sizes, organization and distribution.
  • Drives the team in school vehicles to away games and is responsible for details related to vehicles, gas cards and food purchases for the team.
  • Communicates contest results post-game to the Assistant Director of Club Sports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

  • Marketing/Promotion
  • Holds recruiting meetings and tryouts to encourage potential student-athletes to participate in the sport.
  • Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs and other organizations.
  • Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets and awards night.

    • Knowledge of and ability to interpret rules, regulations and techniques of the sport.
    • Must be self-starter, capable of independent action and project initiation without supervision.
    • Skills in creating effective team environment.
    • Able to accommodate flexible work schedule including participation in evening and weekend events and able to travel throughout College district.
    • Able to represent the College in a positive, professional manner and work effectively with community partners.
    • Able to interact with a diverse set of individuals and groups representing a variety of backgrounds.
    • Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of stakeholders such as referees, club sports association members, athletic trainers, COCC staff, and students.
    • Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity.
    • Ability to display patience in interactions with students and community visitors who do not have experience with the athletic process.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using English language with or without the use of auxiliary aids or an interpreter.
    Ergonomic Requirements
    Work hours are determined by the supervisor and vary based on business needs and locations. Position assignments may be assigned an alternate schedule to service the campus needs. Requires the ability to sit, stand or be mobile for extended periods, and possibly in various weather outdoors. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
    Minimum Requirements
    Education:
    • High School diploma or equivalent

    Experience:
    • Two (2) years of experience coaching or playing the sport.

    License:
    • Current valid Oregon driver’s license or ability to obtain prior to scheduled activity date; must be able to gain approval for driving according to the COCC Driving Policy.

    Certifications:
    • CPR certification or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience coaching the sport at the club, high school or college level.
    • One (1) year of experience in a higher education environment.
