Position Summary
The primary purpose of the Clinical Trial Patient Navigator (CTPN) is to help address low participation of patients of color as well as patients with low income in cancer clinical trials. The CTPN will work with the Community Outreach and Engagement Office, Clinical Protocol Office (CPO), and the North Carolina Office Patient and Family Resource Center to promote equitable cancer research participation. The CTPN will be primarily responsible for three essential tasks: identifying and connecting patients underrepresented in clinical trials with providers and clinical protocol office study coordinators, clinical trial patient education, and addressing barriers to cancer research participation. 
The oncology clinical trial navigator will develop and/or use existing resources to educate patients about cancer clinical trials. They will develop and maintain a database of resources to address logistical barriers to trial participation including transportation and linkage to hospital and community services. The navigator will screen oncology provider’ schedules for Black/African American patients receiving cancer care at the NC Cancer Hospital to identify individuals to share general information about cancer clinical trials. The navigator will also accept referrals from providers for patients with low socioeconomic status and other populations underrepresented in cancer clinical trials to facilitate education and communication about clinical trials. In addition to general education about clinical trials, the CTPN will perform a needs-based assessment for potential barriers to trial participation, and address barriers by providing assistance with transportation and lodging, referral to hospital financial counselors and social workers, and connect potential clinical trial participants to appropriate social and community resources as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Previous experience with patient contact in a health care setting; excellent communication skills; ability to function independently with limited supervision; excellent command of technology, including Microsoft Office software.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prior experience in education; data entry and data management experience.
