 Description of the Clinics

The Family Defense Clinic teaches law and graduate social work students to work in interdisciplinary teams to protect the rights of parents and to defend against the disruption and injustice routinely inflicted on families by child welfare authorities. The clinic has helped spearhead a family defense movement–in New York City and nationally–to push back against the surveillance and unnecessary separation of low-income, disproportionately Black families. The Criminal Defense and Reentry Clinic explores the ways that defenders can provide holistic representation to clients charged with criminal offenses, assist clients in navigating the consequences that flow from contact with the criminal legal system, and engage in advocacy to advance justice beyond the confines of individual criminal cases.

Qualifications

The successful fellowship candidate will have:

  • Experience providing civil legal services to low-income clients;

  • Minimum of 3 years of post-J.D. legal experience;

  • Membership in the New York Bar (if not already a member of the New York Bar, must apply for admission by waiver or take the New York Bar exam); and

  • An interest in clinical teaching.

    Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Early application is encouraged. Please submit a cover letter addressing your interest in this fellowship and in clinical teaching, résumé/CV, complete law school transcript, a list of at least three references, and a writing sample via Interfolio with the subject heading
