Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Citywide Focus Team Clinical Supervisor, the incumbent provides continuous, comprehensive mental health services including crisis intervention, outreach, therapy and case management to a caseload of severely mentally ill adults who are high users of psychiatric mental health services, often with concurrent substance abuse and/or health problems. Citywide Focus celebrates the notion that each of us is embedded in a culture and community that provides support. Citywide Focus consist of four Focus team that specialize in providing culturally and linguistically competent services to the diverse communities of San Francisco.  The Cross Currents team focuses on Women, Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender and HIV positive clients. The Hong Ling team has a focus on Asian clients. The Kujichagulia team focuses on African American and European American clients. The Senderos team specializes in working with Latinx and Korean speaking clients. The CSW position assesses presenting problems, obtains psychosocial history, conducts mental status examination and diagnoses using the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM); participates in a multi-disciplinary treatment team; acts as liaison to inpatient units and other service providers to facilitate referrals and service/treatment; maintains client records according to California, City and County requirements; maintains a master-level requirements; attends staff meetings and participates in training session, other duties assigned.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) is dedicated to providing services that integrate medical, psychiatric, and addiction treatment. SFGH is the largest provider of acute psychiatric care and the only San Francisco provider of psychiatric emergency care.


Required Qualifications

  • CSW I: Masters degree in social work, psychology, or counseling or related field from an accredited school of social work. In addition to all the above apply.
  • CSW II (in addition to the above).  A Master's degree in social work, psychology or counseling from an accredited school of social work and possession of the requirements necessary for application for licensure as a clinical social worker, as determined by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position in addition to all the above apply.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others. Ability to work in a high stress, high volume area and work well under pressure and with deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately, and be detailed oriented. Able to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required timeframes. Knowledge of medical and/or psychiatric terminology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting
  • One year experience doing community based case management and the ability to do outreach including to SRO hotels
  • Able to lift 50lbs and climb stairs
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability
  • Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior related UC experience
  • Case Management experience
  • Two years working with severely mentally ill adults, the homeless and dual diagnosed populations
  • One year experience working with African American, LGBTQI, HIV+, Latinx, Chinese or Korean clients
  • Language proficiency in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean or Spanish
