Job Summary

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is recruiting a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) for the Children’s Communication Center (CCC).  The CRC will provide operational and research expertise to support the clinical, translational, outreach, publicity and quality improvement/research activities of the CCC.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Comprehensive care coordination (pre- and post-visit) for patients seen in the multidisciplinary CCC clinics
  • In-person participation in CCC clinics for patient recruitment, consent, and survey administration
  • Coordination and in-person participation in off-site CCC clinical research and outreach activities.
  • Coordination and in-person participation in translational research for the CCC, including biospecimen collection, processing, and analysis
  • Telephone survey administration
  • Database management and data entry
  • Review of medical charts and electronic records to extract medical information and other data for use in studies
  • Administrative support for research study activity (including working with the UCSF Committee for Human Research and other regulatory agencies)
  • Management of pediatric multidisciplinary CCC clinics, serving as a primary contact for all patient’s families
  • Maintain the CCC website and social media program

    Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    Department Description

    The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) is a clinical department at UCSF with budgeted revenue of $26M for FY19. With ~ 32 MD clinical faculty, the department provides sub-specialized patient care at eight clinical sites in the San Francisco area, performing ~ 83,000 procedures per year. Divisions within OHNS include Pediatric Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Laryngology, Otology, Rhinology, Minimally Invasive Skull Based Surgery, Facial Plastics and Sleep Disorders. The UCSF hospitals are ranked #1 in Northern California by US News and World Report. The department also has a robust research enterprise with 10 PhD faculty, and $6.8M in sponsored research budgeted for FY19. OHNS has consistently been in the top five institutions for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding. The department has a residency program with 20 residents. In addition, ~ four - five fellows receive subspecialty training annually. The Department has experienced double-digit growth over the last two years with expansion of clinical services to other cities in the bay area. OHNS was one of the first departments to be fully integrated at Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland providing excellence in Pediatric patient care and offering clinics in several East Bay cities.


    Required Qualifications

    • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.
    • Computer experience: Microsoft applications, FileMaker pro, video and photo editing software
    • Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population
    • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 1-3 years of experience working with children ages 0-18 in a classroom or clinical setting
    • At least 1 year of experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing children and their families
    • Proficiency in a second language (Spanish or Cantonese preferred)
    • Fluency in the usage of Committee of Human Research (CHR) online iMedRIS system for submission, renewal, and modification of protocols through this system
    • Understanding of patient population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation
    • Experience with electronic medical records
    • Experience with clinical patient management, including scheduling and insurance authorization
    • Experience with RedCap database structure, maintenance, management, and/or creation
    • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.)
    • Knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines
    • Prior experience as a teacher of children with special needs
    • Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines:
