Job Description Summary

The Penn Center for Perioperative Outcomes Research and Transformation (PennCPORT) focuses on improving the health and well-being of patients undergoing surgery, critical care, and pain treatment through high-quality comparative effectiveness research and implementation science. Located within the Perelman School of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care, CPORT brings together investigators from a wide range of disciplines to tackle questions of pressing importance to clinical care and health policy. Since 2106, Penn CPORT investigators have received over $25M in funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Organization (PCORI), NIH, and private foundations, and CPORT research has been published in top medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet, and Annals of Internal Medicine.
Then CRC B/C will play a critical role in coordinating and supporting the My Anesthesia Choice-HF project and will interface on a regular basis with CPORT leadership, research scientists at Penn and key collaborating institutions (Darmouth, Washington University in St. Louis), Penn clinicians, patients, and families. The primary function and purpose of the CRC B/C will involve coordinating center functions to include site start-up activities and ongoing remote and in-person site coordination and support, development and maintenance of trial documents, procedures, policies, development and maintenance of public-facing materials to include the project website as well as research coordination activities at UPHS recruiting sites involving human subjects research submissions, subject recruitment and enrollment; data collection, data entry and data quality monitoring, AE/SAE tracking and safety reporting, and engagement with clinical leads to ensure successful project implementation and conduct. Additional duties include provision of research coordination and for other ongoing and new projects by CPORT investigators.

Job Description

The Clinical Research Coordinator B/C will support clinical research investigators within the Penn Center for Perioperative Outcomes and Transformation (Penn CPORT) in the preparation for, conduct of, and completion of all Human Subjects Research projects and sub-projects in which they are engaged. This position will work principally on the PCORI-funded My Anesthesia Choice-HF multicenter study. This study will refine, implement, and test a new, evidence-based clinical conversation guide that is designed to increase shared decision making in anesthesia choices for hip fracture surgery among older adults. Responsibilities of the project will include both key coordinating center functions for a multicenter study, including site start-up, ongoing support, and development and maintenance of trial documents, procedures, policies, and public-facing materials, as well as research coordination activities at UPHS recruiting sites within the trial. This position will report administratively to Clinical Research Project Manager for Anesthesiology and Critical Care and indirectly to Dr. Mark D. Neuman, CPORT Executive Director.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinating center activities related to site start-up, coordination and management, including but not limited to: development of site training materials; provision of assistance in training and on-boarding site investigators; assists with execution of all site IRB reliance agreements with the University of Pennsylvania IRB for relying sites; scheduling, planning, and (as needed) participating site visits; coordinating and participating all weekly project team meetings, monthly co-investigator meetings, and advisory board meetings; serving as principal point of contact for My Anesthesia Choice participating site investigators and teams.
  • Development of study specific documents and study tools including but not limited to Case Report Forms and completion guidelines, operations manuals, standard operational procedures, workflow processes and similar, patient pre-screen and screening logs.
  • Leading UPHS site-specific activities to ensure study and site compliance with applicable regulations and policies, whether Penn is or is not the lead study site, attend meetings with PI and study sponsor regarding study status and updates, work with project manager to determine logistics for study procedures.
  • Ensuring study progress by actively engaging the faculty to identify and enroll applicable subjects and performing all necessary activities associated with study maintenance including recruitment, enrollment, and data collection. Assist with development and maintenance of public website and other educational and outreach resources related to My Anesthesia Choice project.


In addition to above, the Clinical Research Coordinator C manages students, temporary/part-time staff, summer research students, and research assistants; independently prepares of progress reports and final reports for funders; manages the study clinicaltrials.gov posting and study website build and maintenance; independently leads reliance agreement process with relying sites and IRB submission and modification applications for the Penn site and the overall study; independently leads quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives related to data collection and AE/SAE reporting across all sites.

This position is contingent upon grant funding.

Qualifications

Clinical Research Coordinator B

  • Bachelor of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Clinical Research Coordinator C

  • Bachelor of Science and 4 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
