Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach 3 undergraduate Y.C. C.S. courses each Fall and Spring semester. (The number of courses may be temporarily reduced for some semesters if all sections of all C.S. courses can be covered by other professors and this professor has been asked to take on other significant department projects for the given semester.) The specific courses are determined on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Act as the primary author of a to-be-determined set of courses. The primary author is responsible for consistently maintaining and improving a course, in terms of keeping its content up to date and rigorous, as well as in terms of the pedagogical approaches and tools used to teach the course. The primary author shall share all such material / knowledge with other professors teaching other sections of the courses.
  • Be physically present on campus at least 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday), even if not teaching, in order to be available to interact with students.
  • Provide educational and career guidance (and, when possible, industry connections) to CS students. There is no specific number of hours per week required, but the professor must make a good faith effort to be available and guide the students on an ongoing basis.
  • Assist the department chair in any/all aspects of the running of the department all year, as needed. (If this grows to take up a large amount of the professor’s time, the professor’s teaching load will be reduced, as described in the first item above.)

  • Demonstrated expertise in a specialty within Computer Science that is aligned with some of our course offerings
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • A track record of going beyond oneself via volunteer / non-profit / community work of some sort. This can include any type of activity (adult education, pro-bono work, etc.) in which one gave to others without being paid.
  • Extensive experience in presenting to both small and large audiences
  • Teaching experience, even if at a small scale or on an infrequent basis
  • PhD in Computer Science, or equivalent experience*
  • At least 5 years of experience in building distributed systems, AI/ML systems, or data pipelines/infrastructure
  • Familiarity with major research publications in whatever area listed above that one has 5 years of experience in

*We are defining “equivalent experience” as demonstrating ongoing and up-to-date mastery of CS in general, and some sub-specialty in particular, to the same extent as would be demonstrated by one possessing the given degree. Such mastery can be demonstrated by work experience, publications, or any other means that the Y.C. C.S. faculty deem to be equivalent.
