Job Summary
The UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory (ITL) is a high complexity clinical laboratory that performs tests and provides services that support solid organ and blood & marrow transplant programs. Functions of the Typing Specialist include performing on-call duties for the deceased donor transplant programs; entering patient and sample information to the Laboratory Information System; preparing cell subsets; isolating DNA; HLA typing by various methods; crossmatch testing by flow cytometry and Pronase methods; screening and identifying HLA antibodies; chimerism testing; performing KIR genotyping; and other HLA-related and non-HLA tests; assisting in managing samples (store, retrieve, and aliquot samples); performing quality control and routine maintenance on various laboratory equipment; analyzing and reporting laboratory data; ordering supplies, repairs and other services; answering phones and performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
As the Typing Specialist, the incumbent is responsible for the daily function of the typing section of the laboratory. This includes prioritizing of samples, ensuring adherence to established turnaround times, verifying the adequacy of reagents and consumables, monitoring quality control testing on reagents and instruments before their use with patient samples, addressing and resolving instrument issues, handling and solving problems within their expertise, escalating issues beyond their expertise to the supervisor and/or director. Additionally, the incumbent reviews and approves results for reporting, serving as the principal reviewer, approver, and reporter of typing results. They also sign off reports for other test areas such as HLA antibody, KIR genotyping, crossmatching, and/or chimerism testing.
In addition to the supervisor, manager, and director, the incumbent serves as the subject matter expert for typing methods. The incumbent stays updated on relevant literature to ensure that the laboratory possesses cutting-edge knowledge, skills, and methods for performing HLA typing testing, including exploring its potential application for other tests. Additionally, the incumbent serves as the primary support for other technologists assigned to perform typing tasks in the laboratory.

Department Description
The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus. The Department is comprised of seven divisions including Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery.
The UCSF-ITL is a high complexity clinical laboratory that performs tests and provides services that support solid organ (kidney, heart, lung, liver, pancreas, islet, etc.) and hematopoietic stem cell (blood, marrow, cord blood, etc.) transplant programs. The laboratory is CLIA certified and is licensed by the states of California and New York. The lab is also certified as a free-standing-histocompatibility laboratory by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). The laboratory serves as a core laboratory for the NIH Immune Tolerance Network and provides support for several national clinical trials.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from college with a major in an appropriate scientific field, possession of a clinical laboratory scientist license or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the California Department of Health and two years of experience as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position.
- Must be able to perform on-call duties including reporting to the laboratory within an hour of notice or call.
- Must be able to work variable shifts as required by laboratory operations including weekends, nights, and early mornings.
- Accurate and be able to process multiple samples without switches.
- Be able to work with personal computers.
- Must be effective as a member of a team.
- Proven record of being reliable and be able to multi-task.
- Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Tidy and orderly.
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of 4 years relevant experience as a licensed technologist in a clinical histocompatibility laboratory; 2 of which are in HLA typing by various methods (e.g., RT-PCR, NGS, SSP, and SSO).
- Experience with QC/QA/QS in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Working knowledge of antigens and genetics of the HLA system and be able to interpret results correctly.
- Advance degree in a relevant field (e.g., Immunology, Biochemistry, and/or Genetics).
License/Certification
- Current California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist or Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS).
