Position Summary
(Classified as: Per Diem Non Exempt Healthcare)
Temporary hourly-intermittent position available on or after March 18, 2024 and ending on or before March 17, 2025 in Health and Wellness. Appointment will be made for one year from date of hire with the possibility of reappointment based on budget, department needs, and job performance.
Under the direction of the Student Health Center Director, and supervisory authority designated to the Laboratory Director, the Clinical Lab Scientist performs a variety of laboratory testing procedures which provide the medical staff with the necessary data for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment for various diseases and conditions found in the university student health center setting.
Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides Laboratory Services.
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance including resolving technical problems.
  • Plan, organize and perform clinical laboratory tests including complete blood counts, urinalyses, wet mounts, potassium hydroxide preparations, rapid pregnancy tests, mononucleosis tests, stools for occult blood, rapid glucose testing, rapid strep screening, rapid flu screening and rapid Covid-19 testing.
  • Will be responsible for more complex clinical laboratory testing in which the steps are not always clearly defined.
  • Provide information assistance with regards to specimen collection and processing.
  • Maintain and operate laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Comply with federal and state licensing regulations, ensure licenses are current.
  • Conduct quality control procedures.
  • Dispose of laboratory waste properly.
  • Processing of specimens and handling of reports related to outside laboratory services.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the Student Health Center staff, students, and others in the campus community as well as others in the medical community.
  • Work independently, problem solve, and learn new skills needed for EMR and LIS management.
  • Oversee aspects related to send-out testing and interfacing of results into our systems.
  • Assists and consults with medical staff regarding ordering and receiving laboratory tests results, adding new tests, and making changes in laboratory services as needed in operations.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement Analysis.
  • Emergency Preparedness.
  • Policy and Procedure (assists in writing and revisions as needed).
  • Assists with laboratory inspections and accreditation.
  • Provided day-to-day supervision of the performance of all testing done in the lab.
  • Keep accurate records of the specimens collected and tests performed.
  • Conduct regular proficiency testing.
  • Maintain monthly reports for review with the Lab Director.
  • Revise lab procedure manual as needed.
  • Research, develop and introduce new test procedures for laboratory diagnostic use.
  • Maintain the laboratory in an orderly and operational condition.
  • Order supplies as needed for in-house testing and for send-out testing.
  • Collaborate with clinical or Information Technology staff as needed.
  • Attend laboratory and campus related training as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications
    Education: Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
    License: Must possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
    Experience: Two years of progressively responsible administrative and technical work within a clinical laboratory.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Current CPR certification
  • Experience in laboratory certification and accreditation.
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of clinical laboratory science including the use and care of all applicable laboratory equipment and systems.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control procedures, protocols and standards.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of various laboratory disciplines, tests and procedures including chemical, physical, microscopic, microbiological, bacteriological, serological, hematological, immunological, and other related disciplines and laboratory tests.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of automated computer systems used in clinical laboratory settings.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the operation of a clinical laboratory.
  • Ability to serve as a technical consultant within the laboratory regarding methodologies, protocols, and established laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to identify and locate sources of information about various new tests and used of new equipment.
  • Demonstrated competency in the performance of complex and advanced laboratory analyses.
  • Ability to adapt and introduce new and modified tests into the laboratory.
  • Ability to identify incongruities in test procedures and inconsistencies in reports of test results for a patient.
  • Demonstrated skill in the performance of a variety of laboratory analyses and evaluate information against measurable criteria and skill in noticing pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.
  • Ability to extrapolate data to develop new test criteria and standards and develop procedures, quality control checks and instructions necessary for new or modified tests.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and carry out laboratory activities to meet administrative guidelines and medical needs.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance studies and compile statistical information required to meet state and federal licensing standards, requirements, and accreditation programs.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare various administrative and laboratory analysis reports.
  • Ability to perform applicable mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to keep current in developments in the field of clinical laboratory science.
  • Ability to provide lead work direction to professional and support laboratory staff.
    License or Certifications
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
    Salary Range
    Anticipated salary will be $34.46 - $37.91 per hour. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full range: $34.46 - $72.30 per hour)
