Job Summary

Independent of supervision, provide technical support for the Livestock Medicine & Surgery Unit: routine, emergency & critical care to livestock patients (cattle, sheep, goats & swine) & technical assistance to clinicians, residents, students & technicians. Perform anesthesia: induce, monitor, record, maintain & recover anesthetized animals. Collect samples & perform diagnostic testing, restrain patients, use livestock chutes & equipment, administer treatments, monitor patients, maintain accurate medical records, perform surgical nursing, provide outpatient receiving support. Provide technical support to other Large Animal Clinic areas including critical nursing care in the Large Animal ICU/ISO/NICU and technical support to other VMTH services. Duties include technical/nursing duties, patient monitoring, instruction, laboratory & infectious disease control & sanitation. All duties performed in a way that does not result in actual or increased potential exposure of patients or personnel to infectious disease agents. Provide on call coverage for Livestock Medicine & other Large Animal Clinic services. Maintain supplies & equipment, restock, clean & disinfect work areas & equipment, milk cows, instruct students & new technicians. Provide facility maintenance.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Maneuver/lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform physical restraint & handling of large domestic farm animals, (sometimes fractious) including bulls.
  • Perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Muck & clean stalls using shovel, pitchfork, broom.
  • Work and stand for 8-10 hours/shift.
  • Work standing bending and kneeling for 8-10 hours/shift.
  • Ability to move quickly when working with fractious, aggressive livestock. 
  • Ability to transport patients in and out of cars, on and off gurneys and in and out of stalls.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures & review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations & University Policy.
  • Working hours subject to change and include primary and on call shifts and include days, swing, grave, weekdays, weekends, holidays & academic vacations.
  • If scheduled on call" must be able to report to work within 45 minutes following call.
  • Work occasional overtime & various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages & holiday shifts).
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: boots, scrubs, gowns, coveralls, Tyvek suits, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves & head covers.
  • Requires working with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gaseous anesthetics, infectious & zoonotic diseases & distraught clients.
  • Work in crowded areas where strong odors are present, with exposure to bodily fluids and waste from animals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum License/Certification:

 

Current CA Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.

 

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

Experience handling, restraining & working (fractious and aggressive) with livestock including cattle, sheep, goats and swine and knowledge of livestock anatomy/ physiology to identify abnormal physical signs and appearances.
Experience observing & recording patient behavior & bodily functions & to use the appropriate medical record/forms/flow sheets/terminology.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

Skill to provide consistent patient care with unpredictable heavy workload, emergency situations and provide technical assistance t clinician during life threatening situations.
Oral & written communication & interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students & staff to ensure understanding in receiving & giving instructions.
Skill to perform PCV, TP, electrolytes, blood gas, acid/base balance, glucose, beta hydoxybutyrate & operate lab equipment.
Skill to perform aseptic techniques to assist with major and minor Livestock Surgical procedures.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

 

Experience providing treatments on patients with life threatening illness or injury based upon clinician’s orders.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

Skill to instruct on basic technical diagnostic, nursing, livestock handling & husbandry procedures.
Knowledge of anesthetic procedures including induction, monitoring, maintenance and recovery of patients from anesthesia and manage various treatments.
Knowledge of Livestock Medicine as it pertains to disease processes with common drugs used and prohibited in the use of food animals.
