Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC is a division of the Department of Otolaryngology/ HNS and includes the pediatric cochlear implant team, the CCCDP financial assistance program, pediatric cochlear implant research, listening and spoken language therapy, speech and language diagnostics, speech and audiology tele-health, UNC Coaching Collaborative to train and coach professional in the field of listening and spoken language as well as training and mentoring students in the fields of speech-language, audiology and deaf education. The unit is financially supported by the NC Department of Health and Human Services, the NC Department of Education, the Department of Otolaryngology/ HNS, research grants, private foundations, an endowment and private gifts. This program is one of the largest pediatric cochlear implant program in the country, performing approximately 135 implants each year and following over 900 active cochlear implant patients. It is internationally known and respected. As the program increases in reputation our patient population, professional training outreach and clinical research continues to grow. Position Summary | The Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine is seeking an Open Rank Clinical Speech Language Pathologist Faculty Position with an emphasis in the development of listening and spoken language for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. This position would be located in the UNC Children’s Cochlear Implant Center in the Department of Otolaryngology/ HNS. The primary purpose of this role is to provide quality speech language therapy to children and adults who are deaf or hard of. Applicants should have experience in the area of hearing healthcare; pediatric cochlear implants and the development of language through listening. In addition to providing quality therapy, this position trains and mentors students, teachers of the deaf, speech language therapists and audiologists in providing listening and spoken language therapy. Primary job duties include: assessment of the speech, audition and language skills of children who are deaf or hard of hearing; provide habilitation of speech, language, and auditory skills to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and rehabilitation of audition for adults receiving cochlear implants; collaboration with local teachers of the deaf and speech language pathologists in serving children in their local community; and training and coaching parents to facilitate their child’s language growth. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Masters of Speech Pathology, Certified Clinical Competence in Speech (CCC-SLP) and 5 years clinical experience in hearing healthcare. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Certification in Listening and Spoken Language (LSLS Certification) |
