Clinical Assistant Professor of Agronomy in Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrient Management

The Agronomy Department at Purdue University is seeking applications for a clinical Assistant Professor (9-month appointment with opportunity for summer supplement) with Extension, research, and teaching responsibilities in soil fertility and crop nutrient management. The successful candidate will lead an innovative Extension and research program focused on nutrient requirements needed to sustain or improve crop yields, while reducing nutrient losses to the environment. The successful candidate will develop and disseminate science-based information to producers, technical service providers, certified crop advisors, and state and federal agency personnel using appropriate information delivery technologies. Original primary research, as well as synthesis of existing literature via systematic reviews/meta-analyses, are encouraged. The appointee is expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research and Extension program that supports graduate students and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific literature. The successful candidate should also have demonstrated involvement in classroom education.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized Extension and research program focused on improving nutrient management of crop plants while minimizing losses to the environment. This could include studies aimed at understanding the impact of climate, management, and plant genotype on relevant performance metrics (e.g., yield, nutrient losses to the environment, tissue concentrations, nutrient use efficiency,….). The candidate is expected to engage with the stakeholders as they establish an externally funded, nationally and internationally recognized Extension and research program in soil fertility/plant nutrition. They will teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses, be an active departmental and university faculty member, and engage in national and international professional activities. Teaching responsibilities could include courses in soil fertility, plant nutrition, nutrient management, precision agriculture, crop diagnostics, or other topics as needed. Potential exists for teaching distance courses.

Applicant must already possess Ph.D. at the start of selection process in soil science, crop science, agronomy, or other related fields. Demonstrated experience with soil chemistry and fertility, including field research, and translating science from existing data/literature using meta-analytical tools. Previous teaching experience, positive teaching reviews, collaboration participation, and leadership roles are essential.
