Non-tenured, Clinical Faculty Appointment in Secondary Social Studies and Cultural Foundations, Department of Teaching & Learning, Phyllis J. Washington College of Education

We are seeking applications for a non-tenure track, clinical faculty member to join our professional team of professors, clinicians and staff in the Department of Teaching & Learning. The clinical assistant professor will teach secondary social studies to undergraduate and graduate students, assist with the recruitment and mentoring of new and current students, and devote considerable time to establishing partnerships with tribal and community colleges in the state as a pathway to UM’s secondary educator preparation program.   In addition to secondary social studies, the successful applicant will teach a graduate course in multicultural education.  Applicants with a strong background in Indian Education for All are especially encouraged to apply. 

The Phyllis J. Washington College of Education is home to three academic departments: Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Teaching & Learning. We are also home to five specialty units: the Learning & Belonging (LAB) Preschool , the University of Montana Institute for Early Childhood Education , the Montana Digital Academy (MTDA) , the University of Montana Safe Schools Center , and the National Native Children's Trauma Center (NNCTC) . Position Details:

Non-Tenure Track Clinical Faculty:  Department of Teaching and Learning, Phyllis J. Washington College of Education

Title: Clinical Assistant Professor

Position Type: Academic

Schedule:The position is full-time for two academic years (10-month) to commence in the Fall of 2024.

Entry Rate: $65,000-$70,000 commensurate with qualifications.

Primary Duties: Primary duties include teaching, recruitment, mentoring, and establishing partnerships with tribal and community colleges. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in social studies, cultural foundations, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience teaching in middle or high school settings.
  • Ability to work closely with new colleagues on department goals and attend regular faculty meetings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues across campus, with our community partners in K-12 schools, and students.
  • Desire and ability to help recruit and prepare/mentor teacher candidates for teaching careers at the middle and high school level in social studies or closely related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of experience teaching secondary social studies in middle or high school settings.
  • Experience teaching college students.
  • Knowledge and training in Cultural Foundations and Indian Education for All.
  • Experience supervising teacher candidates in clinical placements.
  • Familiarity with online learning management systems.
