The University of Houston–Downtown Criminal Justice Program is seeking candidates for the non-tenure track position of Criminal Justice Clinical Assistant Professor and Field Placement (Internship) Coordinator to start in January 2024. This position is a 12-month appointment. A Clinical Assistant Professor will normally teach a 3-3-1 course load (three 3-credit hour courses each Fall and Spring long semester and one course in the summer). The successful candidate for this position will receive course releases commensurate with the semesterly workload required to serve in the capacity of Field Experience Coordinator.

Job Description:

  • Under the Director of Field Experience, run the operations of the criminal justice field experience program, which includes but is not limited to,            recruiting and maintaining field placement sites, preparing and orienting students to the field experience process, meeting with and orienting              students, and matching them with field placements
  • Troubleshoots field experience issues/concerns
  • Teaches at least one 3-credit hour (non-Field Experience) course each long semester
  • Engages in field experience work throughout the winter break and the summer

Qualifications

 

The successful candidate will teach in a variety of formats that demonstrate a theory-based and community-engaged teaching philosophy and engage in service to the institution, profession, and/or community. In addition, the hired individual will have completed a master’s degree in criminal justice or a closely related field. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD in criminal justice or a closely related field
  • Prior professional employment in criminal justice agency
  • Prior experience overseeing field experience (internship) students

  The College:

The College of Public Service (CPS) has two departments: Criminal Justice & Social Work and Urban Education. The college offers four bachelor's degrees and two master's degrees. The college is within walking distance of major police agencies, correctional facilities, and county, state, and federal courts. Additionally, the CPS maintains relationships with key social service providing organizations that serve the greater Houston area. 

  The Department:

The Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work offers degree plans leading to the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Criminal Justice, the Master of Science in Criminal Justice, and the Bachelor of Social Work degrees. The department recently added an innovative graduate-level Applied Corrections Certificate that draws on the combined strengths of the criminal justice and the social work faculty of the department. 

  The Program:

The Criminal Justice Program employs 18 full-time faculty members (14 tenured and tenure-track and 4 lecturers). The program serves traditional and non-traditional student populations with diverse backgrounds and professional interests. Students in criminal justice have opportunities to join academic and professional student organizations, engage in service-learning and high impact opportunities and internships, work with faculty on research projects, and learn from adjunct professors who currently hold leadership and practitioner positions in the criminal justice system.
