Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Diagnostic Laboratory Service Manager, provide diagnoses of pathogenic microorganisms from clinical and necropsy specimens of domestic animals, poultry, wildlife, and marine animals in a veterinary teaching hospital. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests are performed on significant clinical bacterial isolates. Perform routine hospital surveillance for salmonellosis or other bacteria or fungi transmitted between people and animals. Train new lab staff and students. Order and maintain media and supplies on a weekly basis. Operate and assist in the maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments. Enter patient information and specimens(s) and retrieve results or information.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum License/Certification:

·         California State Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, equivalent national Medical Technologist (M.T.) license or California State Public Health Microbiology license.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience recognizing pathogenic bacteria and fungi in using staining (e.g. Gram, acid-fast, lactophenol cotton blue, etc.) and colony morphology on agar media.

  • Experience with conventional and kit-based biochemical tests and morphology of bacterial and fungal organisms as a key to identification as outlined by laboratory diagnostic manual.

  • Experience following procedure and laboratory protocol manuals.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of types of media used to isolate pathogenic bacteria and fungi and ability to select the appropriate one.

  • Knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpretation.

  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and diplomacy to interact with a diverse group of people: faculty, clients, residents, students, and staff regarding microbiology tests and results.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:  

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and technical procedures found in a hospital laboratory or veterinary clinical laboratory setting.

  • Experience entering and recording data in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice guidelines.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·         Knowledge of laboratory sample requirements.
