About the Position:

The Library Specialist is a member of the Circulation Staff at Branner Earth Sciences Library. We seek a dependable, punctual, and communicative individual to support the operations of the library and provide high quality customer service to our users. The staff member will be relied on to open and close the library when scheduled, as well as to communicate library policies to users. Working under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the Library Specialist performs a variety of tasks including administering circulation procedures, monitoring the library email account, maintaining course reserves, and processing incoming materials as needed, under general supervision, exercising some initiative. 

Core Duties:

Circulation (40%)

·          Perform routine circulation functions such as charging, discharging, managing holds, and communicating how users can address library fines

·          Refer fine appeals to supervisor

·          Perform routine library privileges services according to established policies and procedures. Assist patrons with access problems, route problems to supervisor. 

·         Monitor library email account 

Materials Processing (45%)

·         Receive and prepare new acquisitions and items paged from auxiliary libraries; prepare return shipments

·         Process new books prior to shelving and notify requesting patrons of availability

·         Perform searches for missing items

·         Screen and evaluate circulated materials for a variety of treatment options (i.e. repair, bindery)

·         Under direction of the librarian, reviews and processes monographic and serial gifts and tracks materials sent to Acquisitions/Gift Department

Reference (4%)

·         Answer informational and ready reference questions in person and via email with clarity, accuracy and professionalism

·         Instruct users in the use of library catalog and other basic informational resources 

·         Assist users and perform basic troubleshooting for library technology such as photocopiers, printers, microfiche readers, etc.

Reserves (5%)

·         Create, maintain or delete records for Course Reserve collections

·         Process print and online Course Reserve materials 

Building duties (3%)

·         Monitor patron & visitor entry into library.

·         Opening and/or closing activities such as managing doors, lights and computers; 

·         May perform walk-throughs to monitor or clear the building of all patrons 

·         Investigate door alarms, report building or patron incidents to supervisors, Facilities and/or public safety as appropriate. 

Other (3%) 

·         May train, schedule or supervise student or hourly staff in routine service desk operations or routine collection maintenance activities. Assist supervisor in hiring or coaching hourly 

·         Other special projects and duties as assigned

Schedule:

·         Work is part-time, 75% FTE

·         Hours and schedule vary according to Stanford’s Academic Calendar and library’s operational need.

·         Expected work schedule for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters is Sunday-Thursday (Sunday 12:45 PM – 6:15 PM, Monday – Thursday 8:45 AM – 3:30 PM)

·         Tentative work schedule for Summer and Intersessions is Monday-Friday (Monday-Thursday 8:45 AM – 3:30 PM, Friday 8:45 AM – 2:15 PM)


Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Experience with direct interaction with patrons

·         Demonstrated supervisory experience

·         Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email

·         Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills

·         Able to apply judgment in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives

·         Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and efficiently

·         Possess strong communication skills in English

·         Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work well under pressure

·         Record of excellent attendance

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

Education and Experience:

·         Two-year college degree plus one or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email

·         Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include:

·         Willingness to work with foreign language titles

·         Knowledge of basic principles of library practice; familiarity with and comfort using SearchWorks, FOLIO and other computer-assisted library function

·         Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work well under pressure

·         Record of excellent attendance and timeliness

·         Demonstrated ability to work smoothly and collaboratively in a team environment

Physical Requirements:

·         Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs.

·         Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy

·         Ability to lift books that are up to 10 pounds

·         Ability to kneel and reach

·         Must be able to stand for many hours

The expected pay range for this position is $25.48 to $32.69 per hour.
