Description of Work Unit | The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President at Colorado State University seeks a strategic leader with strong expertise in leadership and organizational development and human resources to serve as the Chief of Staff and Associate Vice Provost for Organizational Strategy and Academic Leadership Development. All the university’s academic colleges report to the Provost/EVP, as do the Libraries, the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Vice President for Research, the Office of International Programs, the Graduate School, and Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness. Via the Provost’s Council for Engagement, the Office of Engagement and Extension also reports to and collaborates directly with the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President. Position Summary | The Chief of Staff & Associate Vice Provost for Organizational Strategy and Academic Leadership Development reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President and is the Provost/EVP’s chief strategy officer. The position collaborates with all Vice Provosts, Deans, and other academic leaders to ensure the timely and successful implementation of the Academic Master Plan. The position sets strategy for the Office of the Provost/EVP and is the chief strategy advisor to the Provost/EVP, implementing strategic priorities and policies for the Division of Academic Affairs in line with University mission and the President’s priorities. This work requires close coordination with the President’s Chief of Staff, Vice Provosts, Vice Presidents, Deans, other University leadership, and with college/department level plans in order to inform and successfully implement the Provost/EVP’s strategy. The position will develop and implement the Provost/EVP’s internal and external strategies and interact, interpret, disseminate and negotiate with internal and external constituents as assigned; create and support strategic transformation planning, implementation, assessment, annual recalibration and reporting; and engage with internal and external partners. This position often attends events and meetings on the Provost/EVP’s behalf, is often assigned to be the delegated representative of the Provost/EVP, and serves as the primary back-up when the Provost/EVP is unavailable. This position regularly has decision-making authority as required to resolve complex issues, move strategic initiatives forward, and address operational and policy gaps and inefficiencies, in coordination with their many colleagues and in the spirit of shared governance and teamwork. The position always represents the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President with utmost professionalism, tact, discretion, and collegiality. This position will serve as a liaison between the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President and other Cabinet members and prepare and coordinate strategic plan reports. The Chief of Staff/AVP will provide leadership for all workforce planning efforts for the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President. As the senior liaison, the Chief of Staff/AVP will provide executive oversight of the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President and manage the Provost’s Office team, including serving as supervisor and hiring authority. The Chief of Staff/AVP will lead the annual evaluations of the Provost/EVP’s direct reports, including implementing an annual and five-year evaluation process and executive coaching and leadership development programs. Coaching and leadership development resources will be extended to college leaders including Associate Deans and Department Chairs/School Directors in an effort to provide proactive and positive opportunities to develop the next generation of academic leaders at CSU and contribute to the success of individuals serving in these roles. The Chief of Staff/AVP has direct responsibility and decision-making authority for the Office of the Provost/EVP budgets, with the support of the Budget Manager, and provides oversight as needed for units reporting up through the office, thereby allowing the Provost/EVP to focus on the overarching University budget and financial planning with the CFO and Office of the President. |
