Job Summary:

Under the administrative direction of the President, the Chief of Staff is responsible for implementation of complicated strategic and tactical objectives of the Office of the President, for overseeing and coordinating executive communications, and leading and coordinating special high-profile projects. Represents the President, campus officials, and critical external constituents. Serves as a visible top-level leadership role for the institution on behalf of the President. This is an executive position that sits on the President's Council. 

Major Accountabilities:

  • Implementation of complex strategic and tactical initiatives.
  • Assist the President and President's Council with ongoing alignment of the mission, vision, and values of the university.
  • Assist the President and President's Council to be most effective with their limited time.
  • Represent the President in select circumstances, as assigned, including hosting dignitaries and special guests. 
  • Act as advisor to the President on all matters, providing analysis, advice, and counsel as appropriate. 
  • Lead and coordinate special high-profile projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate Presidential communications.
  • Act as point person during crises or sensitive public matters.
  • Build capacity in the executive leadership team.

Education, Experience:

     Required:

  • A firm commitment to BYU's mission. 
  • An advanced degree in Law, Business, Public Affairs, or related field. 
  • 10 years of relevant work experience.  

    Preferred:

  • Previous Chief of Staff work experience.
  • Previous higher education experience. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong emotional intelligence, judgment, discretion, confidentiality, and diplomacy.
  • Solutions-oriented problem-solver with an ability to anticipate problems, analyze/synthesize data to inform decision-making. 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Executive hosting experience. 
  • Extensive communications experience. 
  • Strong networking abilities. 
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and practices of organization management. 
  • Knowledge and experience in technology development and transfer.
  • Skill in policy analysis, political affairs, organizational change, legal affairs, and business affairs. 
  • Skill in team building, group dynamics and conflict resolution.
  • Skill in leadership.
