Minimum Position Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area and 10 years of appropriate experience, as well as a proven record of success in senior leadership positions. Must be Tennessee POST certified or certifiable within six (6) months of hire.
Required to have or obtain basic certification for operation of Tennessee Information Enforcement System (TIES). Certification must remain active.
Must have a valid driver’s license.

Initial screening begins Monday, December 4, 2023 and will occur each Monday thereafter until the position is filled.

Job Duties


Duties & Responsibilities
Oversees police services department and the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on property owned by or under the control of the University of Memphis. Implements comprehensive safety plans for the campus community.
Supervises and manages sworn police officer to ensure adequate staff is retained. Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for campus police officers and staff. Stays informed about best practices and emerging trends in campus law enforcement and security. Ensures officers receive appropriate training in areas such as crisis intervention, cultural competency, and victim advocacy. Fosters a culture of professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct within the campus police department.
Coordinates and oversee law enforcement activities on campus, including patrol, crime prevention, and emergency response. Investigate criminal offenses that occur on campus and work closely with local law enforcement agencies when necessary.
Manages Police Services budgets and regularly monitors the condition of police equipment and vehicles and authorizes purchases, as needed.
Reviews, evaluates, and executes programs, policies, and procedures that will help assure the safety and security of people and property at all University of Memphis locations. Drafts safety and security policies to be submitted to the university policy review board.

Ensures reporting compliance with various state and federal requirements. Maintains crime statistics for the University and reports them to the TBI and Department of Education (Clery Act) in partnership with the Executive Director of Business Continuity and Risk Management. Provides follow-up information of incidents and crimes the university executive team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Collaborates with campus administrators, faculty, and staff to identify and address safety concerns. Conducts special investigations as assigned by the University administration. Works closely with the Office of Student Accountability, Legal Counsel, Behavioral Intervention Team, Internal Audit, and Human Resources and may assist with investigations. Represents Police Services and Business and Finance on several committees and serves as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team to assess students of concern.

Corresponds with the university community regarding safety needs and practices. Communicates regularly with the police command staff and other university officials to ensure all police personnel and need to know parties are aware of current developments and trends. Remains available for contact and response at all times unless a designee has been named in advance. Communicates with the media as designated by the University and in collaboration with the Division of Marketing.

Maintains close alliance with other law enforcement officials and agencies at the local, state, and federal levels and liaisons with the local and state law enforcement community. Analyzes reports on the incidents handled by Police Services and those handled by the Memphis Police Department in the overlapping precinct(s) and the Jackson Police Department/Madison County Sheriff’s Office for the Lambuth Campus. Identifies crime trends and develops intervention strategies to reverse negative trends that affect the University’s campuses and centers.
