Chief Dental Officer/ Assistant Dean for Practice-; Non-tenure track faculty position

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment with administrative duties in the High Point University (HPU) Workman School of Dental Medicine and HPU Heath- Oral Health Network. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications at time of hire. The Chief Dental Officer (often known as an Assistant Dean for Practice in dental schools) oversees patient care services and ensures the highest possible quality of patient care. The CDO serves as a bridge between the academic program (DMD) and its clinical network (HPU Health- Oral Health Network). The Chief Dental Officer must be a licensed oral health professional and possess a current state-issued license to practice dentistry. Finally, the applicant should have at least the minimum continuing education credits needed to maintain their license. Because the Chief Dental Officer position includes both clinical and administrative skills, applicants must have clinical experience treating patients and administrative experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • DMD or DDS from a CODA accredited program
  • Eligibility for unrestricted licensure from the state of North Carolina
  • Advanced dental education (specialty agnostic) is preferred

Experience and Training

  • At least 5 years of clinical practice in a dental service organization (DSO) or similar organization (e.g., management of multiple dental practices)
  • Work in multi-discipline practices or clinical enterprises

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :  

Practice Management

  • Leads the coordination, development, and performance of the HPU Oral Health Network which includes acquisitions, de novo construction, clinical and administration workflows, and standard operating protocols (systems)
  • Develops objectives and key results (metrics) for performance of the HPU Oral Health Network
  • Develops training pathways for clinical attendings (preceptors) and support team
  • Revises and publishes a Practice Guide annually prior to the beginning of the Summer that provides detailed information regarding policies and procedures to be followed by students, faculty and staff related to clinical operations. 
  • Maintains an appropriate and legally acceptable patient record system and be responsible for storage, content, release, and adequacy in a manner that is consistent with applicable regulations. 
  • Reviews practice fee schedules on an annual basis, recommending changes when appropriate, and coordinate implementation of fee revisions with the Chief Strategy Officer and appropriate team members. 

Clinical Operations Oversight

  • Works with the Director of Clinical Operations, Manager of Credentialing, Manager of Compliance, and Director of Quality Improvement to ensure seamless practice operations.
  • Conducts, with the assistance of the Director of QI, quality assurance audits in the areas of treatment rendered and record keeping; adherence to infection control protocol; timeliness of patient care and completion cases; injury reports; remakes; fee adjustments and fee waivers; and patient satisfaction. This information will be reported to the Clinician Council and appropriate segments shared with various didactic/clinical disciplines. 
  • Works with the Chief Strategy Officer in ensuring fiscal goals are being met from clinical activities.
  • Develops an ongoing summary of actual and projected needs for the operations of HPU Oral Health Network.
  • Supervises all clinic policies and procedures as well as develop and implement new policies and procedures related to patient care and clinical operations as needed. 
  • Helps coordinate after-hour emergency care and maintain after-hours emergency care data. 
  • Helps coordinate clinical space assignment to ensure an efficient utilization of chairs and equipment. 
  • Monitors all procedures necessary for the maintenance and protection of property and equipment assigned to all clinics. 
  • Assures the effective use of clinic equipment, personnel, and supplies. 
  • Institutes and maintains acceptable methods and procedures of infection control, instrument sterilization and radiation hygiene, and monitor both student and faculty compliance with these protocols and directives. This information will be reported on a regular basis to the Standards of Care Committee. Off-site clinics, through the Director of Extramural Programs, will report annually on the Infection Prevention Checklist for dental settings. 

Education Support

  • Coordinates the integration and interrelation of treatment modalities of the various clinical disciplines. 
  • Maintains regular communication between faculty, students, and staff regarding clinical operations. 
  • Monitors patients assigned for treatment to assure that care is being provided within a reasonable time period and in accordance with an approved treatment plan. The CDO will also coordinate record audits and the recall system to monitor patient care. 
  • Oversees maintenance of information regarding the performance and productivity of each student and each practice location. In the case of student data, such may be required to be reported to the Assistant Dean for Education for purposes of monitoring student activity through the CARE Performance Review Team
  • Contributes, as appropriate, to all accreditation self-study initiatives. 

Mentorship & coaching

  • Oversees the Clinician Council for development of evidence-based practice (EBP) and formulary for supplies, materials, instruments, laboratory, and equipment (SMILE).
  • Serves as a mentor for faculty and staff in the Oral Health Network.
  • Develops training pathways and faculty development in collaboration with the Deans for Professional Success.
  • Serves as the coordinating authority during resolution of differences of opinions regarding treatment plan options. 

Clinical Research

  • Partners with industry to develop the technological capabilities of the HPU practice network, including the potential for HPU to serve as a beta tester for new clinical technology. 
  • Partners with clinical research organizations (CROs) to build out clinical research opportunities within the HPU practice network in collaboration with the Dean for Research/Chief Discovery Officer.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • The CDO will report to the Dean for the HPU Workman School of Dental Medicine
  • The CDO will be accountable for objectives and key results of the practice network as it comes to clinical compliance, infection control metrics, and calibration/consistency.
  • The CDO is the responsible party for ensuring HIPAA compliance, patient records, radiation, and patient and provider consent among coordination with the appropriate staff
