Position Focus:


Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Clinical Operations Officer (CCOO) shapes and executes comprehensive strategies relating to clinical operations, member experience, and patient safety within Yale Health. Collaborating closely with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the CCOO spearheads the development and execution of these strategies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives. Exercising financial oversight, the CCOO partners with the Head of Finance to ensure fiscal responsibility for the clinical operations.

Serves as a key member of the Yale Health executive team, ensures Yale Health's reputation for excellence within the Yale University community and the broader medical landscape is upheld. Collaborates closely with senior leaders and ensures alignment of efforts to advance the organization's mission and values, while also advocating for quality and utilization management issues within the healthcare community. Facilitates seamless integration and collaboration with diverse stakeholders, fostering synergies and advancing the institution's mission of excellence in education, research, and healthcare delivery.

The CCOO champions the delivery of high-quality, efficient care across all facets of Yale Health's operations. Through strategic oversight and proactive leadership, the CCOO fosters an environment conducive to optimal patient outcomes and satisfaction. This includes providing mentorship and guidance to the Associate CCOO and Clinical Services and Associate CCOO – Member Experience and Patient Safety, as well as more than 200 diverse nursing staff throughout the operation, holding them accountable for the delivery of exceptional services within their respective domains.

Strategic planning efforts extend to areas such as facilities planning for new clinical programming, marketing, communications, and community outreach. The CCOO is deeply committed to fostering a culture of professional growth and development, offering mentorship and coaching to staff to enhance internal workforce capabilities. Externally, the CCOO engages with stakeholders, forging strategic partnerships with entities such as Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale Medicine. Representation of Yale Health in various forums involves advocacy for quality and utilization management issues, thereby contributing to the broader healthcare community.

They will have progressive experience within managed care, accountable care, or health system settings, with a notable tenure of over a decade at the senior leadership level or in prominent management roles. Essential Duties

1. Develop and execute the clinical operations strategies.  2. Develop and execute the member experience and clinical safety strategies.  3. Supervises Associate Chief Clinical Operations Officer–- Clinical Services and Associate Chief Clinical Operations Office – Member Experience and Patient Safety. This includes accountability for the planning, development, implementation, and ongoing supervision of all clinical managers and associated staff, including but not limited to the ambulatory clinics of Surgical and Medical Specialties, Acute Care, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Care Management, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Clinical Support Services (Call Center and Central Reception), Student Health/Athletic Medicine, Nutrition, Allergy and Immunization, Endoscopy unit, Infusion and Medication Center, Infirmary, Diagnostic Imaging, Physical Therapy services, and Lab, as well as member services and HIM, patient safety, regulatory operations, and infection control.   4. Develop and oversee operational plans, budget, staffing, and equipment requests.    5. Ensure regulatory operational compliance for all licensed and certified units.   6. Design strategic planning, including facilities planning for new clinical programming, marketing, communications, (internally and externally) community outreach, and organizational development.  Responsible for the direction of patient and staff education.  Assesses educational programming regularly to ensure it is in alignment with strategic initiatives.  7. Oversees the development of the nursing role at Yale Health and ensures adherence to evidence-based protocols.  8.  Develop a strategy for member experience, member retention, and satisfaction programs focused on service quality and patient experience.  9. Leads service recovery.   10. Develops and leads Yale Health’s marketing strategy with the Director of Communications and Member Services toward membership growth and retention and Yale Health’s reputational goals.  11. Directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for health information management at Yale Health.  Ensures policies support organizational strategic objectives and program planning. Ensures all health information management practices comply with JC and other applicable standards.    12. Closely collaborates with the Benefits Planning on current and future benefits, focusing on implementation and member communication.  13. Mentor, coach, and develop staff in all roles to ensure internal workforce development and foster a culture of professional growth.  14. Collaborating with OGC, CMO, and CQO, develops patient safety strategy and oversees the program to assess and manage risk.  15. Working with OGC and Head of Compliance, maintains regulatory licensure, with ongoing monitoring and improvements when necessary.   16. Meet regularly with key leadership inside and outside Yale Health, especially, but not limited to, those in Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale Medicine, forging key strategic partnerships.   17. Coordinate and integrate Yale Health nursing and clinical support activities with those of affiliated University and community agencies, e.g., Yale School of Medicine Faculty Practice Plan and Yale New Haven Hospital.    18. Serve as a Yale Health representative in community, State, Federal, and industry forums that address quality and utilization management issues.  19. Represent Yale Health Management on the Union Management Leadership Team (UMULT).


Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in nursing or a related field and at least 15 years of experience within managed care, accountable care, or health system settings. 


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Advanced expertise in patient experience, clinical safety, and quality of care, with broad knowledge and experience implementing best practices and innovative methodologies. Proficiency in leveraging cutting-edge technology and emerging trends to enhance healthcare evaluation, delivery, and outcomes, ensuring alignment with evolving industry standards and patient needs.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated proficiency in ensuring facility compliance with regulatory bodies, encompassing a thorough understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements. Extensive background in health plan/managed care and integrated delivery system development, with a keen understanding of the complexities inherent in these environments


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Well-developed managerial, decision-making, planning, organizational, problem-resolution, and leadership skills. Proven ability to conceptualize, strategize, and implement initiatives that optimize operational efficiency, enhance care coordination, and drive sustainable growth and innovation. Proven change agent skills.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability to manage people and organize effective task forces and project teams. Experience with broad multi-disciplinary teams. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing care practices and standards.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Understanding of budget and fiscal management requirements.  High level strategic planning skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Familiarity with the university environment, acknowledging the unique dynamics and collaborative opportunities inherent in academic settings. 


Required Licenses or Certifications

State of Connecticut Nursing license, active or eligible with licensure within 6 months of hire.
