Job Description Summary:  

The Chemical Waste Specialist I, under general supervision, is responsible for performing routine tasks and services to assist clients with hazardous chemical waste identification, storage, treatment, transportation and disposal in support of chemical waste operations.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • No experience required.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

  • Must be able to obtain a State of Texas Commercial Driver’s License with a hazardous materials endorsement within 6 months of employment. 

  • Must be able to complete Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training within 6 months of employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS degree with chemistry emphasis or Environmental degree with regulatory emphasis.

  • CHMM or REM. HAZWOPER certified.

  • Currently posses a CDL License.

  • Knowledge of DOT Shipping.

Essential Duties/Tasks

Chemical Waste Program Support

  • Assist clients with basic hazardous material identification, storage, treatment, transportation and disposal.

  • Separates chemicals according to hazard classification and recognizing potential signs of hazards.

  • Supports on-site testing of unknown chemical substances.

  • Contributes to the sampling and profiling of chemical waste for analytical testing.

  • Performs routine inspections and monitors chemical waste storage areas and chemical storage devices to ensure safety and compliance with applicable rules and regulations.

  • Ensures that all applicable system, local, state and federal compliance regulations and rules are being adhered to on sites where chemical waste is present.

Chemical Waste Transportation

  • Collects, segregates and properly packages acute waste chemicals for transportation and disposal in a safe and compliant manner.

  • Operates vehicles and equipment to safety transport chemical waste to designated processing area.

  • Assists with preparing basic packing lists/labels, storage labels, manifests and other forms of routine documentation and notifications with regards to the safe storage and transportation of chemical waste.

Record Retention

  • Enters basic data into chemical waste tracking software and maintains records in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.

Emergency Response

  • Assists with chemical waste spill response efforts.

  • Responds with other EHS personnel to emergencies on campus and assists emergency responders as needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift or move heavy weighted objects. 

  • Performing the work and maintaining required certifications involves passing annual fitness exams.

  • Ability to tolerate moderate exposure to extreme temperature, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke, loud noises and chemical substances.

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical for DOT and HazMat (Which includes a pulmonary function test).
