Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Chemical and Isotopics Mass Spectrometry (CIMS) Group is seeking a Chemical Technician to focus on the maintenance and operation of CIMS' cleanroom laboratories. This technician will be responsible for maintaining cleanroom laboratory infrastructure according to established procedures and keeping the team supplied with cleaned labware and ultra-pure acids. This role resides in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) Section, Chemicals Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) ORNL.

 

This position is fundamental to our programs and capabilities. Your work will contribute to advancement of material characterizations for trace and ultra-trace materials. In general, this role involves standardized duties that are performed using detailed and established operating procedures. You will work closely with the Group Leader and other team members to maintain the cleanroom spaces, including sustaining a steady stream of trace clean laboratory supplies. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: acid leaching labware, cleaning cleanroom surfaces, reloading supplies, making new acid solutions, and removing waste. You will also support our sample preparations and clean chemistry operation protocols.

 

The (CIMS) group has extensive history in the analysis of material dating back to the early 1960s. The team resides in the Ultra Trace Forensic Science Center which houses a suite of sophisticated laboratories. The facility contains over 10,000 square feet of cleanroom space used for wet chemistry protocols mainly separations and sample preparation. The separation laboratories feature unique automated separation systems and sample handling infrastructure.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Clean the cleanroom surfaces on a designated schedule.

  • Monitor particle counts and HEPA filter operation.

  • Acid leach labware every day.

  • Document environmental conditions.

  • Maintain and stock laboratory supplies.

  • Collaborate with facilities and group staff to communicate issues.

  • Have technical proficiency in Microsoft office suite and basic computer software.

  • Have a strong understanding of manual pipette operation and general labware functionality.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A High School degree or GED with at least four years of experience in science/engineering; An AS degree and at least two years of experience, or a higher degree will also be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Outstanding attention to detail

  • Ability to absorb instructions and accurately translate them into actions

  • Experience in cleanroom operations and logistical operations

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory

  • Skilled at quickly responding to diverse and fluctuating demands, even when faced with sudden, tight deadlines

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
