Job Description:


Tennessee State University invites applications for the position of Chemical Room Manager.
Primary Responsibilities:
A. Instructional Duties
· Teach courses as required (2 course maximum per semester) to support the undergraduate chemistry lecture and lab curriculum.
· Plan lessons and assignments.
· Work with colleagues to modify the syllabi that meet current requirements and resources for the laboratory courses.
B. Instrument Responsibilities (NMR and related)
· Oversee the weekly operations and maintenance of the NMR facility.
· Report to the Department Head any malfunctions or irregularities of NMR and request for instrument replacement or repair by vendor
· Fill liquid nitrogen weekly (or as needed)
· Fill liquid helium quarterly
· Record helium level and nitrogen level daily
· Perform NMR troubleshooting as needed
· Train new NMR users (undergraduate students, graduate students, and research faculty) on Topspin
· Stay informed about changes and innovations in the field.
· Follow up contracts with vendors.
· Attend NMR training workshops and meetings (as needed)
- Must have practical knowledge in maintenance of research and teaching instruments.
C. Lab Safety Responsibilities
· Maintain compliance with OSHA, ACS, and EPA regulations for all teaching and research labs.
· Report any safety violation issues and lab incidents to the Department Head and Safety Committee
· Consult and advise on laboratory safety matters to the Department Head and Safety Committee
· Serve as ex-officio Safety Officer for the Department
· Monitor the safety fume hoods in all of the Chemistry Department lab spaces and request service, as needed, from Facilities Management.
· Attend all departmental Safety Committee meetings.
· Update the department's Chemical Hygiene Plan as needed.
· Train graduate students on the Department Hygiene Plan and University Safety Policy before students begin any laboratory research or teaching responsibilities.
· Promote a safe working environment.
· Coordinate hazardous waste disposal with the University Environmental Health and Safety Office.
· Stay informed about changes and innovations in the field.
· Attend safety training, workshops, courses and seminars provided by OSHA, TDOT, EPA, and USPHS.
D. Procurement-related Duties
· Manage chemical stockroom and inventory of chemicals and supplies needed for the chemistry laboratories.
· Order chemicals and supplies for teaching labs.
· Stock reagents and supplies for teaching labs.
· Perform annual stock inventory.
· Communicate (as needed) with the university's Legal Counsel, Procurement, and Accounts Payable offices with regard to purchases.
· Process and follow up on contracts with NMR maintenance vendors.
· Follow the university policy for ordering reagents, instruments, and materials for teaching.
E. Other Duties
· Attend departmental meetings
· Monitor the quality of deionized water in the department
· Perform other related duties assigned by the Department Head
· Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, the University Legal Counsel, Procurement Office, Facilities Management, and other departments/offices
· Perform an annual inventory of the department's laboratory instrumentation.
· Keep inventory of all teaching and research equipment and inform the Department Head about any instrument malfunctions.
· Keep inventory of all computers in the department
· Ensure that all chemical and materials storage areas are properly secured at all times.
