Job Summary

Key Responsibilities:

Management of Chemistry Lab Inventory:

  • Maintain expenditure control over approved budget for lab consumables.
  • Obtain quotes and best pricing for lab equipment and consumables.
  • Place orders for chemistry lab equipment and bulk orders of lab consumables.
  • Maintain and manage electronic inventory of new chemicals.
  • Track and order lab solvents and consumables.
  • Assign appropriate storage and restock chemicals into inventory.
  • Generate Excel reports of chemical inventory.
  • Refill input solvents from chromatography instruments.

Management of Shipping/Receiving for Chemistry Lab:

  • Receive chemicals and other orders from external vendors.
  • Arrange for pickup of waste from chromatography instruments.
  • Coordinate shipping/receiving of proprietary compounds to/from international collaborators, including interfacing with customs agents.
  • Coordinate weekly deliveries/pickups with local technical service providers.
  • Prepare, send, and manage shipments of samples to outside vendors for analysis.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Communicate and coordinate with Biology Lab manager and department administration regarding orientation and training of new chemistry employees, and computer/software license purchases.

Technical Support:

  • Prepare samples for ADME and biological assays.
  • Generate stock solutions and TLC stains for lab use.
  • Weigh compounds for HTS plating.
  • Maintain sample bank.
  • Assist with drug formulation in collaboration with chemistry and PKDM.
  • Occasionally use microscopy and other techniques for assessing particle size and form of drug substances.
  • Perform QC analysis of synthesized chemicals.

Perform Experiments and Lab Safety:

  • Perform experiments under the supervision of other lab chemists.
  • Advise students, visiting scholars, and faculty members on laboratory rules and procedures.
  • Maintain LHAT roster.
  • Confirm new employees have completed all required LMS training.
  • Work to resolve safety inspection findings with lab members or supervisor.

The hourly compensation range for this role is 

$28.92 - 34.81

. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate, position requirements, AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.


Required Qualifications

  • High School graduation and two years of laboratory experience, or two years of college, including courses in natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Coursework in organic chemistry
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent time management
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Chemdraw
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to lift boxes weighing up to ~50 lbs

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in chemistry
