Essential functions (job duties):

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the College of Engineering at Wayne State University (WSU) invites applications for the CEE Department Chairperson position with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2024.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is growing, and currently has 13 faculty members in the construction, environmental (air, water, soil), structural, and transportation areas. In addition to offering an ABET accredited BS degree in Civil Engineering, the department offers MS degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental and Sustainability Engineering as well a PhD in Civil Engineering. We are proud of our established urban-serving tradition, and our programs offer a top-tier education while actively engaging in cutting-edge research endeavors. The Department faculty's strong commitment and contributions to research and preparing engineers for the challenges of a dynamic climate and aging infrastructures are well-recognized nationally and internationally. We attract funds for our research through ongoing achievement and research strengths that include: resilient, sustainable materials and theoretical and experimental structural engineering work; innovation in building information modeling, adaptive reuse of historic and other infrastructures; transportation safety, equity, and integrative mobility; sustainable water resources management engineering; air quality engineering. These areas are multiplied though numerous interdisciplinary collaborations within the university and beyond. Current enrollment is approximately 140 undergraduate students (BSCE) and over 60 graduate students, with approximately equal enrollments in MS and Ph.D. programs. The CEE Chairperson will oversee Department operations, personnel, and resources; actively work to identify and pursue innovations in research, education, and service; recruit faculty, and promote faculty development through the academic ranks; lead the Department and its industrial advisory board in strategic planning and advocate for the development of a departmental vision for academic leadership and excellence; work with other chairs in the College and all units in the Dean’s office as a part of the College management team in setting the stage for growth in the College; collaborate with faculty to develop and enhance curriculum, ensuring it meets accreditation standards and needs of the engineering profession; monitor and assess academic performance, student outcomes, and program effectiveness; maintain accreditation (ABET, HLC); champion initiatives that support student success, including internships, research opportunities; represent the Department to the academic community, industry, and government; and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging within the department and the institution, which draws from a pluralistic community of students.


Qualifications:

Candidates applying for this position must be qualified for the appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and have a strong track record in publications and attracting research funding from diverse sources. Evidence of scientific and organizational leadership, administrative skills, resource allocation, educational innovation, outstanding communication abilities, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (DEI) are essential. A strong track record of administrative experience and professional engineering (PE) licensure are highly desirable.

Submit 1) a full, recent curriculum vitae with publication, funding, list of leadership and mentoring roles; 2) a cover letter summarizing qualifications and leadership approach, including leadership roles and accomplishments, and how you have used your budgetary and administrative experiences toward these roles; 3) a statement highlighting research accomplishments and future vision for the research and educational missions of the department; 4) a teaching statement describing the applicant’s experience in instruction and mentoring of students and faculty; 5) a statement discussing the applicant’s philosophy toward promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as they apply to your vision for leadership; and 6) names and contact information of five references.
