The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) seeks a dynamic, accomplished, and visionary physician leader to serve as its next Chair of the Department of Dermatology. The Chair will be an exceptional academic leader with a substantial record of clinical, academic, teaching, administrative, and operational achievements to lead the Department into the future. This is an outstanding opportunity for an inspirational leader to revitalize the Department of Dermatology’s clinical, academic and research enterprise.

In August 2022, UMSOM welcomed its current Dean and VP of Medical Affairs, Mark T. Gladwin, MD, a widely recognized physician scientist and former Chair of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. With this new leadership, UMSOM and the Department of Dermatology is poised to undertake new directions in clinical strategy and growth, expansion of the academic mission in collaboration with other University of Maryland schools, the promotion of educational programs of the highest caliber, and developing partnerships within the community.

The Department of Dermatology at UMSOM is committed to advancing clinical care, education, and scholarship to help patients with diverse dermatological conditions.  The Department enjoys a rich history of academic, clinical, and research excellence and a current faculty and staff that functions well in in every important mission. 

UMSOM seeks a leader who will be responsible for the growth and advancement of the clinical enterprise, teaching excellence and scholarly activity. The Chair will possess a high level of integrity; embrace inclusion and diversity; have a demonstrated record of successful recruiting; and the ability to inspire, manage, mentor, and galvanize a diverse team. The new Chair will be an expert at building internal and external relationships and possess communication skills that inspire others, build positive working relationships, and aligns individuals and teams to work synergistically. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a leadership style that is focused on the success of the faculty in all of their endeavors; commitment to the Chair’s role in institutional, as well as departmental leadership, deep understanding of the role of culture in organizational success; and a willingness to be both strategic and tactical in achieving department objectives.  They must be passionate about seeking consensus, but not afraid to make difficult decisions or lead change.  The Chair will also devote efforts toward philanthropic growth, cultivating long-term strategic relationships with individuals and institutional funders to secure philanthropic gifts that benefit the department and institution as a whole.

Qualified candidates are those who: hold a medical degree (MD, MD/MPH, MD/MBA, MD/PhD) or equivalent; are board certified in Dermatology; and are eligible for licensure in the state of Maryland and a faculty appointment at the Associate or Professor level at University of Maryland School of Medicine.
