The Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology (IBP) at McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston, is seeking an accomplished investigator and leader to serve as its next Chair. This is an exceptional opportunity for a world-class scientist to lead a basic science department in the world’s largest medical center. Investigators with a track-record of funded research in cell biology, physiology, pharmacology or a related field are encouraged to apply.  
 
Since the department’s infancy, IBP has cultivated a strong reputation for conducting innovative research focusing on the molecular mechanisms and dynamics of cell regulation and communication in various diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular biology, tissue regeneration, neuronal signaling, inflammation, and gastrointestinal and renal physiology.  Comprising over 100FTE’s, the department currently has 34 faculty members (13 full, 8 associate, 9 assistant professors and 4 instructors) with 26 independent principal investigators. IBP has a robust track record of securing significant grants from NIH, DoD, and the American Heart Association. This success is reflected in the substantial $7.1 million in grant funds awarded to the faculty during fiscal year 2023.  
 
A successful candidate for the Chair of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology will be dedicated to mentoring others and will have a proven track record of faculty development and external funding. • Developing the academic careers of existing faculty members and recruiting and mentoring outstanding new faculty members in educational efforts and in funded scholarly research
• Continuously developing a rigorous, productive and independent externally funded research program 
• Establishing and fostering collaborative relationships and research initiatives with faculty in other McGovern Medical School departments and across the university 
• Evaluating the current strengths of the IBP department and identifying areas for productive growth in educational and research programs, including postdoctoral research fellow training
• Continuing the superior financial performance and well-being of the department
• Representing UTHealth Houston and IBP at the university, local, regional and national levels
• Fostering creativity, innovation, and initiation of ground-breaking research programs in cell biology, physiology and pharmacology
• Ensuring the future improvement of the department’s performance and reputation

Qualifications
• Ph.D. in cell biology, physiology, pharmacology or a related field 
• Independently well-funded researcher 
• Qualified for appointment as a senior-level faculty member
• Previous academic leadership experience
