Chair, Department of Anesthesiology

 

The University of Texas Health San Antonio (UTHSA), Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. The Chair will be responsible for aiding with the recruitment, retention, and development of anesthesia faculty and non-physician anesthetists with primary appointments in the Department of Anesthesiology and in other departments that provide anesthesia services for a robust clinical practice. This includes but is not limited to anesthesia for cardiothoracic surgery, hepato-biliary transplant, lung transplant, advanced neurosurgery with intraoperative imaging, acute stroke interventions, trauma, orthopedic trauma, robotic surgery, and high-risk obstetrics. Additionally, facilitating the growth of critical care medicine and interventional pain medicine is required.

 

The Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology is the academic, clinical, and administrative leader of the Department. The Chair is responsible for building a nationally leading program in anesthesia services through the recruitment, retention, and development of the current 104 full and part-time faculty greater than 50% FTE (45 physicians and 59 certified nurse anesthetists) who hold primary appointments in the Department of Anesthesiology. The Chair of Anesthesiology will lead and direct programmatic, clinical research, and educational development within the department.

 

Qualified candidates for the position of Chair of Anesthesiology will be selected from a diverse pool and will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

 

·                  A distinguished academic and professional career, including significant clinical, teaching, and research experience. 

·                  MD/DO, MD/PhD or equivalent degree required, additional advanced degrees beneficial. 

·                  Scholarly and professional achievement meriting the academic rank of Professor in an appropriate clinical division. 

·                  Board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology. 

·                  Eligible for licensure in the state of Texas. 

·                  A significant leadership role in a complex, multi-faceted university, or academic medical center, with demonstrated strategic and implementation skills, particularly with respect to balancing the academic tripartite mission. 

·                  Demonstrated leadership in an academic medical center as a division chief, department chair, center director, vice chair, or other relevant position.
