Position Summary
The Center Manager will manage operations, projects, and activities for the Center for Advancing Health Services, Policy, and Economics Research at the Institute for Public Health (IPH). They will coordinate with Medical School, Brown School, and IPH leadership and staff on center operations and activities and contribute to the growth of the center.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Project Coordination

  • Liaise with research partners, local organizational partners, and others as appropriate.
  • Support supervision of student/trainee researchers and external consultants, where appropriate.
  • Support logistics and coordination of Center research projects as needed (eg, calendaring, communications with partners, supporting general compliance with project and grant requirements).

Operational Management

  • Serve as the primary facilitator and liaison between staff and relevant units within the University (e.g., other IPH Centers, Human Resources and Administrative Offices) to ensure efficient execution of Center hiring, operations, and fiscal management that advance the Centerâ™s overall goals.
  • Maintain administrative systems for Center, including for project management, contacts, fundraising, financial management, calendaring, file sharing, etc.
  • Liaise between Center and University administrative entities for sponsored award processing, project ethics review, HR matters, etc.
  • Contribute to fundraising / development efforts for Center (prospecting, proposal submission, grant reporting).
  • Manage Center finances (budgets, expenses, reimbursements, etc.).
  • Process hiring and administrative on-boarding of consultants, students, etc.
  • Process invoices and liaise with vendors as needed.
  • Prepare grant reports with post award teams and liaise with post award teams on budgets, expenses, reporting, etc.
  • Manage logistics for Center-related travel (transport, hotel, visa, etc.).

Event Planning

  • Develop, plan, and implement events with support of the Institute for Public Healthâ™s Event Coordinator (eg, webinar series, student events, policy and research workshops, Advisory Board/staff/Affiliated faculty meetings, social events, etc.).

Communications and Outreach

  • Manage Center communications in coordination with IPH Communications Manager.
  • Develop news stories, blog posts, newsletters, and annual reports.
  • Contribute to the Centerâ™s website content.
  • Develop a social media strategy and long-term plan for growing visibility on social media platforms.
  • Implement social media and other outreach / awareness-raising strategies related to the Centerâ™s work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Touch-down space and hotel office availability at Medical School, ability to travel on- and off- campus locations.
  • Computer work predominates.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masterâ™s degree with at least five years of professional experience.
  • Familiarity with Washington University administrative and financial systems strongly preferred.
  • Two to three yearsâ™ experience with effective financial management, including collecting, interpreting, and reviewing financial information; producing financial reports related to budgets, grant expenses, projections, etc; reviewing, monitoring, and managing budgets; developing strategies to adjust spending. 
  • Professional experience in health policy, public health research, program/project coordination, community outreach and engagement.
  • Familiarity with project management programs and tools (eg, Asana).
  • Experience designing and planning communications and social media content in platforms such as Canva, Hootsuite, and/or Mailchimp.
  • Ability to learn institutional systems and maintain administrative protocols for Center in consultation with Directors.
  • Ability to work in an autonomous manner.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Uncompromising integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, collaboratively, diplomatically, and professionally with diverse project teams, institutional and community partners, and varying levels of leadership.
  • Ability to respond promptly and professionally to communications from colleagues.
  • Experience with developing and using databases to track and analyze a variety of information.
  • Proven ability to move from concepts to action for organizing and implementing programs and special events.
  • Ability to generate and grow communications presence (eg, website, newsletter, social media.).
  • Mastery of basic computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Accounting, budget management, and grant compliance experience.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three years of professional work experience or equivalent education and experience.

Salary Range
$57,300.00 - $97,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
