Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Campus Recreation provides a diverse and intentional recreational program in a safe, inclusive, and accessible environment which enhances the social, mental, and physical well-being of the entire University community. With this mission as the focus, Campus Recreation’s program offerings include intramural sports, aquatics, sport clubs, fitness and wellness, expeditions, challenge course, open recreation, special events, climbing sports, adaptive sports, and well-being outreach.
Position Summary
This Carolina Adventures Coordinator position provides administrative and programmatic leadership to the Challenge Course program under the supervision of the Senior Assistant Director of Carolina Adventures. The position is responsible for the safe direction, planning, organization, supervision, and evaluation of staff and programming conducted within Campus Recreation’s Challenge Course program. The individual in this position plans, directs, and administers challenge course programming to UNC students, faculty, staff, other UNC-affiliated groups, as well as for local businesses, schools, and non-profit organizations in the community. The Challenge Course annually generates more than $60,000 in program revenues, while serving approximately 110 programs and more than 4,000 participants. The Coordinator is responsible for development and administration of the annual operating budget. 
The Coordinator prepares and empowers challenge course facilitators to enhance experiential learning opportunities to program participants. The position provides leadership, training, oversight, and feedback to student and non-student staff as they design, conduct, and evaluate programs that promote a deeper understanding of group development, team dynamics, and effective and respectful communication. In addition, the Carolina Adventures Coordinator for the Challenge Course actively teaches, trains, and develops outdoor recreation leaders through the Outdoor Leadership Series, and provides supervision on a limited number of student-led Carolina Adventure expedition trips. The position implements all risk management protocols and responsibilities associated with the high and low ropes course and Challenge Course programming.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field. 
- Professional experience working in an outdoor recreation or related setting 
- Experience training, developing, and supervising facilitators, student leaders, and employees. 
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a goal-oriented team. 
- Wilderness First Responder certification required or willingness to obtain post hiring.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Prior outdoor recreation program management experience in a higher educational or collegiate setting and directly supervising student workers and employees. 
- Experience with challenge course instruction and facilitation. 
- Experience in an indoor climbing facility. 
- Demonstrated experience successfully leading several of the following outdoor recreation activities: rock climbing, backpacking/hiking, sea kayaking, flat-water kayaking, mountain biking, and/or stand up paddleboarding.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Weekend and evening work may be required.
Ability to move/lift up to 50 lbs.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
