Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The primary purpose of organization unit (department) is to protect life and property of the students, faculty, and staff on the campus of Fayetteville State University and to support the University’s core mission of academic excellence by providing comprehensive and professional public safety services, as well as convenient access to a peaceful and orderly campus community.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
This posting is for multiple vacancies, by applying candidates will be considered based on their knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of the position, qualifications, certifications, and experience. 

This is professional work involving enforcing the law of the State of North Carolina and the United States Government at Fayetteville State University. Employees have full law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area responding to and investigating complaints or calls, and for detection of violations of State Laws and applicable regulations. Conduct self-initiated security checks to protect people and property to include zone checks and building walk-thru; lock and unlock as necessary. Report and resolve traffic problems, safety concerns and other hazards. Detect and deter crime with ability to understand crime activities and trends. Use proper questioning techniques and interrogation skills to obtain information from witnesses, victims and suspects. Establish and secure crime scenes and perform basic processing of crime scene. Record facts and prepare reports to document preliminary and follow-up investigations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, collection and preservation of evidence and ensuring chain of custody, perform DWI arrests, testimony in court proceedings as necessary, and performing related work. Managing traffic check points, investigate traffic accidents with property and serious injury. Properly execute search and arrest warrants and serve other criminal and/or traffic citations or summons. Investigate student conduct issues and testify as a witness at student hearings. Use and maintain law enforcement equipment to include: firearms, baton, pepper spray, radios, emergency lights, siren, Mobile Data Terminal and other related equipment. Employees may serve as a lead officer on an assigned shift and ability to act as a team leader under Incident Command. Position may require shift, weekend, holiday and overtime work.
Description of Work Continued:
60% – Patrolling an assigned area responding to and investigating complaints or calls, and for detection of violations of State Laws and applicable regulations. 25% – Use proper questioning techniques and interrogation skills to obtain information from witnesses, victims and suspects. Establish and secure crime scenes and perform basic processing of crime scene. Record facts and prepare reports to document preliminary and follow-up investigations.
15% – Apprehending observed violators committing offenses, collection and preservation of evidence and ensuring chain of custody, testimony in court proceedings. Execute search and arrest warrants and serve other criminal and/or traffic citations or summons. Investigate student conduct issues and testify as a witness at student hearings.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
Police Officer I: Zero to two years of experience. Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
Police Officer II: Minimum of High School or GED and 2 years’ experience as a sworn local, state or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.
Police Officer III: Minimum of High School diploma or GED and 4 years’ experience as a sworn local, state or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of investigative techniques for misdemeanor and less serious felonies. Knowledge of the requirements to obtain an arrest warrant, search warrant and the warrant issue process. Knowledge of crime scene management and fingerprint lifting tools and techniques. Ability to recognize community problems and campus crime trends and initiate solutions and follow-up.
Communication Skills: Ability to relate to individuals and community groups and plan and conduct campus and community programs. Able to use proper questioning techniques and interrogation skills to obtain information from witnesses, victims and suspects.
Organizational Awareness and Commitment: Understanding of Department vision, mission and core values and is to the Department operations and success. Has the ability to develop new officers by conducting a field training program.
Problem Solving: Understanding of criminal activities and trends and has the ability to initiate, complete, and properly document problem-solving projects focused on crime, fear of crime and quality of life issues.
Analytical and Conceptual Thinking: Ability to differentiate between routine crimes, serious crimes, and emergencies and initiate appropriate action. Ability to use appropriate discretion during criminal investigations, arrests, warrant service and interaction with members of the campus community.
Preferred Qualifications:
An associate’s degree or higher education level.
