The Chemistry Department in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Buyer.

The Buyer position will be responsible for interfacing with vendors and purchasing at all levels within the department. This includes, but limited to: creating, reviewing, and approving shopper carts in the PantherExpress system, preparing Professional Service Agreements, inter-department charges (IDC) transfers, and cash reports. In addition, the Buyer will coordinate the delivery of all large, capital purchases and ensure that all capital purchases are properly recorded and tagged. The Buyer will also serve as the primary shipping agent, arranging for any deliveries or returns required. The incumbent will work closely with the department Sponsored Projects Administrator, Stockroom Manager, the Fiscal Manager and the Administrative Officer to ensure all purchasing is completed within the University policy guidelines. Candidates must be proficient with the Microsoft Office platform software.



Job Summary

Performs routine duties associated with the buying process. Researches and orders products, selects vendors, compiles product information, and studies market trends. Facilitates related administrative tasks for back-orders, quotes, and deliveries. Develops and maintains an efficient database.


Essential Functions 

Must be able to use a computer and keyboard and be able to use video communication technology (i.e., Zoom, Teams, etc.). Work is frequently conducted by email, telephone, in-person, and/or using video communications technology. The ability to communicate in a clear and concise fashion is essential.


Physical Effort 

Minimal physical effort required. This position is generally sedentary within an office setting.
